Xmas in July, Day 18: Hugo

I always wanted a Hugo, Man of a Thousand Faces, but I never got one. I still want one too, damn it! (Sears Christmas Wish Book, 1976)

I remember Hugo, but I don't think I ever had one. Maybe some friend had him, but it's just as likely there was one at school. I do remember disguising him up, but things like this always fell slightly short for me. I found myself wanting to take it too far--Sharpie tattoos? sandable wood putty? flaying?--and by the time I'd get just a little bit down the rabbit hole someone was yelling at me about how I treat my toys.

The only toys I still have that I wish I had been more gentle with are my Shogun Warrior die cast robots. I'm missing fists 'n weapons and some of them are a little rusty-- but shit back in the day I thought these guys were indestructible! Time, though, had other ideas...

I had Hugo. The one thing I wish I still had wasmy Stretch Monster, but finding a working one with an affordable price is nearly impossible to find and you wouldn't want to stretch it, anyway.

(You can get repops. I've thought about it.)

The hugo was a lot of fun, but for some reason, it was limited. It seems neater than it was. He eventually just became another giant moster for my Mego heroes to fight.

One good thing about Hugo is he always creeped people out.

I wish I still had my Stretch Monster too, I can totally remember the day we discovered it popped and leaking at the bottom of the toy box and the goo had hardened and entombed all of the other unfortunate toys down there that happened to be underneath it, forever trapped! Crap!!

I wish I still had one of those too!
