You For Buffet

Here's a cute lil unopened pack of vintage buffet and cocktail invites from Gibson that I found the other day. 12 in all, and all contain the same image, but what a super illustration it is, with a very funny way of wording the invite literally puts YOU on the menu! Please arrive early, *licks lips

Haunted House?

Flaming ghosts can be worse than poltergeists, and just because you-- oh, wait-- that's not really what this 1950's ad is saying at all, in fact, it's taking the very serious subject of home safety and making an important educational game out of it. The more you know! *queue the space rainbow

Daisy Mae Costume & Picto-Puzzle Keychain

It's still only January, but Halloween and Mae Madness have already struck back-- Daisy Mae madness that is! These beautiful objects rolled into my possession over the holidays (courtesy of my own ever lovin' Wolf Gal), and I couldn't be more ecstatic to add them to the 'ol Al Capp / Lil Abner / Daisy Mae collection!

First up, a wonderful 1950's Ben Cooper official masquerade costume, with a rather lovely, "authentic" mask, and super cute illustrations decorating the frock. And let's hear it for the clever Halloween and TV window box design as well! Woot!

Plus, this fun Daisy Mae sliding tile, Picto-Puzzle keychain, which I'm betting was probably something one could buy at a Dogpatch USA gift shop in Marble Falls, Arkansas back in the day!

Looking at the assisting image on the back of the keychain, I'm thinking I have two of the leg tiles in the gol'durn wrong position at the bottom. Tarnation!

Vintage Mountain Dew Can

Found this great old Mountain Dew can a few weeks ago. It contains the groovy lettering style I love and remember so well as a kid, but also contains the "ya-hooo!" catch phrase hold-over from the earlier product and advertising designs that incorporated the cartoon hillbilly. Not 100% certain on the date, but judging from the pull top, I'd say 70's. Has some rust and scratches, but I think it gives the 'ol can some character, don't you?

Fun-World Matchpack Mascots: Scarecrow

Wandering around an antique mall last week and saw a cute matchbox with a ghost on it. I picked it up, not realizing that upon opening it an adorable little bean bag scarecrow with a vinyl head would pop out and stare back at me with his funny googly eyes. Researching online, I couldn't find much info about this Fun-World Matchpack Mascot, (70's or 80's?) though it appears he came with a matching witch in her own dainty designed Halloween matchbox home.

The Constant Minx (PART TWO)

And now for the wonderfully illustrated, super silly second half of Roy Raymonde's classic prehistoric cutie from The Constant Minx (1961.) And now with more centaurs 'n centauresses-- and even a mermaid too!

The Constant Minx (PART ONE)

This is a funny little book of cute 60's cartoons about a sexy minx just trying to make ends meet in the earliest days of pre-history man. Legendary cartoonist, Roy Raymonde, is probably more familiar to some of you for his incredible, timeless work at Playboy during the glory years of that magazine. Enjoy!

Comic Books vs. Scenery

The smart phone generation catches a lot of flack from older generations for having their heads constantly buried in their handheld devices while trudging about in a zombie-like manner and apparently ignoring the world around them. Fair enough, though there is of course a world of valuable information in your phone as well, for example: photo jpegs from the earliest days of newspapers showing crowds of people with their heads buried in the fine print of the day. Hell, I have photos of me from the 80's with my head buried in my handheld Mattel electronic games. So, let's add another log to the fire with this funny midcentury postcard I found the other day of a kid with his head buried in some comics. Guilty as charged here as well...

Phantom Acres: The Ozarks Mystery Spot!

Found this funny 50's brochure today for Phantom Acres Mystery Spot, a midwest roadside Americana tourist destination which was originally located near Bagnell Dam in Lake of the Ozarks, MO. On the countless drives to the Ozarks from STL as a kid back in the day, we always knew we were getting close to the lake when we'd start seeing the "?" billboards along the highway. I have a few memories of this place (and the attractions that surrounded it), but I also think they kind of get confused with the old Tiltmore Hotel at Six Flags (RIP.) Anyway, read the brochure pages below to learn of the gravity / perspective / weight / height defying mysteries (among others) that lay in wait for yon weary traveller at Phantom Acres. Can water and balls really run uphill? Confess your bafflement! Can you really stand at a 45 degree angle with no trouble at all? Utter your confusion! Is there some sort of substance in the ground that puts everything in the vicinity off kilter? Is it supernatural? Is it SATAN? UFOS? What? What?! WHAT??!!! According to the internet, like most things on the Bagnell Dam strip, Phantom Acres is long gone and probably replaced with a biker bar or something... who knows, I haven't been down there in years.

Ima Slooth

Time to take a tremblin' trip down to the Shady Knoll Cemetery and see if we can help 'ol Ima catch a pair of kooky grave robbers-- or are they? This is a barely coherent, but none the less hilariously cornball caper with some really funny illustrations by Joe Beck, and originally from the October 1945 issue of Dynamic Comics #16. And those of you heading over here from THOIA might get an extra kick out of some of the names on the gravestones.

Mercy, Melvin!

A day trip to the state capital with my sister last week proved highly worthy of the 2 hour drive, as we hit a number of antique malls there and all of them seemed to have a great selection of hilariously saucy vintage postcards from the 1940's. These are some of my favorites, the first is a Tichnor Quality Views card, while the rest are all Genuine Curteich-Chicago "C.T. Art Colortones."Yes, there's no better time than winter to post beautiful beach postcards!
