Hedy De Vine

Got a half dozen one-pager comedy cutie escapades for you today, all taken from assorted issues of Hedy De Vine Comics, and Hedy of Hollywood Comics, both published by Marvel throughout the late 40's and early 50's, with various artists assigned to capture her perfectly pretty, though somewhat dim-witted good girl curves and silly antics. And FYI: No relation to Hedy Lamarr!

3 Little Pigs

Speaking of the big bad wolf, here's a cute 'n tiny 3 Little Pigs game I found the other day. It seems a bit larger than the usual Cracker Jack prize, though I guess it could still be one. And for a game called "3 Little Pigs", there isn't a single depicted image of an actual pig anywhere on the backing card-- unless you think pigs look like teeny silver BBs! Anyway, just like in the famous fairy tale, you need to put one "pig" into each of his questionably designed homes, before the bad 'ol hungry wolf devours 'em whilst dressed in his fancy collared shirt and shorts. A molded piece of murky plastic over the card creates the ménage à trois pathways while keeping your bounding balls in place-- so aim for the holes and send those juicy lil squealers home already!

Curse of the Inkwell

Is it a wolf? A lion? A demon? A tiger? Nobody online seems to be able to agree, so I'm sticking with a wolf, which is how this stunningly evil, surprisingly heavy, turn of the century, iron inkwell is tagged at a local antique mall. This would look quite nice sitting here on Mr. Karswell's desk... buuuut is it affordable? Not even close, though that didn't stop me for photographing it from all angles, including a few pix of it opened at the hinged jawline so you not only get a better look at those ferocious choppers, but also the glass ink bottle hidden inside of its beastly throat. Dates vary as well, I've seen the 1890s and early 1910's thrown around on various listings, --clearly this bad boy is as full of murky mystery as it was bottomless black ink...

People Like You...

It's been a bit since we've seen some sugary sweet cuteness and thoughtfulness from Hallmark's 60's / 70's Sunbeam Library collection, and People Like You Make the World Go Round For Me is another perfect example of wonderfully sincere words colliding spectacularly with amazing illustrations, typography, and color! Jean Kyler McManus and Maria Paeletti are the clear team supreme for this type of adorable friendship greeting gift book collaboration-- and you know I'll be digging around my collection to see if I can find more for future posts! :)

Funhouse Mirror '52

Who needs a carnival when in 1952 Kenner Products provided us all with our very own, unbreakable, twisty-warpy, portable, hand held funhouse mirror! Yep, it's the mirror that makes faces at you! I tried a few and not a single photo of my own stupid mug looked nearly as silly as the great illustrations featured on the backside of the mirror. And whoa nelly, am I mistaken, or did we just figure out where some of John Carpenter's The Thing creature design came from?

Fluke Spook

Haven't heard much from everyone's favorite knuckle-headed trio in a while, so let's kick off March Madness AEET style and delve into one of their more dim-witted, monster escapades, --from the August 1954 issue of (St. John's sadly short-lived series), The Three Stooges #6. Some really fun Norman Mauer art here full of freaks 'n hicks and an extra overload of kooks 'n cornballs. And let's not forget the super lovely LOL cheesecake photo cover on this issue too!
