I promised you ghost stories this month for xmas so once again it's time to resurrect a couple of creepy golden age Atlas moldies for a dreary double feature of fright! The first is from the August 1952 issue of Uncanny Tales #2, followed by one from the October 1952 issue of Adventures into Terror #12. More ghosts coming up boo-- errr-- too, so stay boomed-- err-- tombed!
Neat little two-page filler from the December 1974 issue of Red Circle Sorcery #10, with great art by Gray Morrow. Seems weird to think that even by 1974, all 4 of these monstrously fine gentlemen were already gone from this world. Other "essays" found throughout this short-lived Archie Comics series featured spotlights on poltergeists, lycanthropy, voodoo, and the Dibbuk.
I mentioned having more occultish fun stuff in the comment section of my Lucky Spirit incense post a few days ago-- and here we go! From All-Fair Games in 1945, Pot o' Gold is a fortune telling game where-- with the help of rabbit's feet, crystal balls, silver spoons etc-- you can hopefully avoid the perilous pitfalls of black cats, broken mirrors, loomin' ladders, or even being the third on a cursed match to find your future wives, husbands, and fortunes! Is there really gold at the end of that rainbow? "A riot of fun" it says right there on the lid --umm, that is unless you lose! Beautiful box art and attractive board details really make this game a stunner.
I'm sure by now everyone's heard about the unfortunate passing of comic book legend, Richard Corben. A hugely influential, one-of-a-kind, artist extraordinaire, not only on the underground comics scene, but on the majors as well, and seriously, is there anyone on this planet who hasn't marveled at Meatloaf's Bat Out of Hell album cover? I know it blew my 9 year old mind when it first came out, and still does to this day. Anyway, I've posted quite a few of his more gruesome tales over at THOIA over the years, and since it's December I'm guessin' some of you may need some xmas themed terror, so after today's encore presentation of one of my all time favorite twisted tales (from the October 1983 issue of Twisted Tales #5), head over to the THOIA Archive and CLICK HERE and HERE for some not-so-holly, and not-even-remotely-jolly horror day classics. Christmas is coming up fast, and if you haven't already put your minds to it, might I remind you that you better be good, you better be nice, and you better get workin' on those xmas present lists-- aye! And since I'm kinda bored with my old Picturesound programs for my GE Show'N Tell player, I think I'll ask for some new ones. Unfortunately, the ones listed in the Sears Wishbook catalog this year aren't quite "floatin' my boat" as they say. So, with the help of a photoshop elf (aka me), I'm weavin' up a few of my own, because that's what the magic of Christmas is all about... or something. 2020 might be a big pile of poo, but I've still had tremendous luck this year finding some real gems. This week it was a Famous Products Co. Lucky Spirit Brand Black Incense Powder tin from the 30's / 40's. Immaculate condition, with a brilliantly colorful, wonderfully witchy design scheme highlighting both beautiful sides. The topper seems to be welded on tight, though you can still smell the subtly sweet, flowery incense emanating from within. Okay, so I was in the midst of researching and creating a much more involved post about this tin, but two online links I found seem to sum up the fascinating story of the product company and the incredible graphic design team that made this brand's style so visually (and racially) amazing. That is indeed the question! England has ghost stories for xmas-- why can't we in the states? So my vow here at AEET for the month of December will be a ghost story every week of the month leading up to xmas, you know, mixed in with the other usual sort of random stuff you've all come to (hopefully) love about this blog. And we'll kick it off with a bit o'light-hearted haunted house hi-jinx with my all-time favorite comedy duo in one of their sillier Charlton comic book adventures --oh, and I promise the ghostly tales will get much more spooky as we get closer to xmas, let's just ease into it, shall we? From the February 1970 issue of Abbott & Costello #13, plus a bonus one page quickie from issue #4 to round things out as well! Do you dig?
