Found this neat (but empty) box of vintage Popeye Candy Cigarettes a few weeks back. Made in England by Primrose Confectionary Co. LTD Slough too, and I have to say how disappointing it is to not see the word "spinach" on the list of ingredients! Oh well, blow me down...

I think it's the coloring but the Popeye looks a bit off-model. That said, I love how bright and red the package is, and how the white pops. That's really good packaging!
I remember, when I was a kid, there was a brand of candy cigarettes that had a paper coating and there was flour under the paper so you could "blow" smoke.
Interesting color scheme (or is that colour scheme?) of Popeye, featuring a sunburned chin and W C Fields nose.
Neat bit of ephemera of days gone by.
I never could figure candy cigarettes. Like eating sticks of doughy chalk.
I love the box though. I've always really dug this Popeye logo for the color (like everybody's noting). Mostly, my attention is drawn to the blue hat, where the key art and shading are both held in cyan. But I like the red nose, too. That nasty red gash on his chin is weird, and feels like a printing error, but it's often there in other examples, too. I think it morphed into this shape from an earlier version of the logo that featured an open mouth and a red shadow under the lower lip. Earlier versions of this logo were similar in that they were the character head, but were otherwise drawn quite differently. They always had some version of that awesome blue hat, though.
