Bats for Betsy

Oh, what the heck-- how about one more post to really help hammer that final coffin nail into 2024? It's a cake eatin', cat chasin', haunted house hollerin' good time from the Summer 1962 one-shot issue of Dazey's Diary, (published by Dell.) And while it is indeed beautiful 'n blonde, dynamite Dazey's comic book, we're gonna check-in with her best back-up pal Betsy instead, because just like me, not everyone has a big date lined up on a fancy night such as tonight! Also, if you didn't already know that Bill Woggon can draw lovely women (see also Katy Keene!), now you can fully experience and acknowledge how amazing he is at drawing a spooky old cartoon mansion on a hill! Happy New Year, everyone-- and we'll see you all ASAP in 2025 for lots more!

I really like the throwaway joke of Kandy (I get that now) dreaming of cake and the cat of mice.

Is Betsy supposed to be bigger? I mean the comic logic signs are there -- no date, knows how to cook, etc. Yet she's drawn as sexy as any of the other women in comics in 62. It a subtle bit of body shaming but I'm glad she found the hot cop in the end!

BTW the artist does a fabulous haunted abode. I also hope the cops in the 60 weren't shining flashlights in peoples eyes and pointing their gun directly at their heads when they got the drop on them! Yikes!

Little Kandy is the twin for Katy Keen's kid sister, who was only referred to as Sis, only Kandy has blonde hair and no glasses.

Betsy could have been the future Katy, older but still attractive.

It is a shame there wasn't any crossover between Katy and Betsy, though it is hard to tell if it would have been popular with comics fans back then.

Neat story. I always like Woggon's stuff. It's simple, observed, and a little bit wooden in a way that works for me. Like these are illustrations of dolls instead of people. I love the page where Betsy is attacked by the curtain.

It is a little strange that Bill chose to draw that haunted house the very same way six different times. I feel like some kind of time-saving technique must have been in play.

Yes, it seems a very slight double chin immediately qualifies you as a plus size model in this dizzy Dazey world-- even with a 17" waist-size like Vampira!

I had a feeling that was going to be mentioned here in the comments, haha... strange indeed!

Thanks for the comments everyone! And stay tombed for lots more, --2025 is just getting started!
