Phantom of the Rock Opera

Over-the-top monster musical hilarity from the Nov. '71 "HORROR" issue of National Lampoon Magazine Vol. 1, No. 20. I love the comic stuff that NL produced like this that collaged original photography and other cut / paste picture elements into one... and I dedicate it to all my classic shock rock 'n roller friends out there.

Wow, this is early. Did National Lampoon just entirely create this hardcore look for skate-punk zinesters or what? I feel like I'm in Kinko's with the saddle stapler all over again.

Hey, is there a Cheech Wizard in this issue? I'd love to see that.

Nope... but there are a few more spooky highlights left to post for sure, PLUS the next update will include a cross-over post at THOIA too!

Are you a listener to http://www.projection-booth.com/2011/08/31/episode-26-phantom-of-the-paradise/

A terrific discussion which included touching on this, and resulting in an official refutation from Brian De Palma's site that it was in any way an inspiration for PARADISE.

Thanks for posting!

Never heard of it Trevor (Projection Booth I mean, I'm definitely a fan the DePalma film.) So this aired just last month? Boy, sometimes my timing can be scary...

Thanks for the link!

I remember when NL was on the stands in the 80's/ i used to pick it up because it had bit of nudity, but they would sell it to me-- I was in the 4th grade. I always pass these up in the dollar bins at cons, but now I'll have to check them out!

There was a department store when I was a kid that had NLs on the rack too, right next to the comic books... and I remember going through them because of the nudity too. Hell, back then you had to do anything you could to get a peek at the bare flesh.
