Exclusive Fashions by Mattel (1963)

What was Barbie, Ken, Midge, Allan, and darling siss Skipper wearing in 1963 you ask? Why only the most exclusive fashions by Mattel ever-- that's what! I have to admit that as a boy I never had any problem playing with dolls, um... and you definitely don't have to be a Barbie fan to appreciate this wonderfully illustrated mini-catalog of versatile doll fashion and accessories, (plus: gift sets, carrying cases, board games and more!) I wish toy manufacturers still created colorful, fully painted catalogs that were even half as much fun as this one.

I had no idea there were marketed Barbies with bald--ahem, "sculptured"--heads for applying multiple wigs. That's so awesome (and not just a little bit Audrey). I always thought you just had to give her shorter and shorter punk cuts till you got all the way to her tuft holes and threw her out.

Hey, have you seen Toy Story 3 yet?

I know what you mean, they kind of had that big 'n glassy sort of "alien" eyed thing going. My mom still has an original one from her childhood and it's downright spooky looking!

>have you seen Toy Story 3 yet?

I have not, but I did see Despicable Me and enjoyed it pretty much. Anyone see Predators?

I had some paper dolls in the 70's that remind me of these Barbie illustrations. Too bad those are loooonnnnggg gone.

Ken (an 80's version) is the most fabulous new character in the Toy Story trilogy.

I hear ya Beth, if I still had even half the things I once possessed as a kid I'd be a seriously happy adult right now.

Thanks for the comment!

My brother, who is completely straight, (not that there's anything wrong with not being straight) used to play Barbie dolls, paper dolls, and dollhouse with me. And I used to play Tonka trucks and race cars with him. I also let my son play with dolls. He too is completely straight. It makes me laugh when people won't let their kids play with toys that are supposed to be for the opposite sex--as if that has anything to do with forming their sexual orientation.
