"Spooks an' Crooks!" / Goofy Ghost

I felt like I kind of swindled you guys in the previous "Mostly Ghostly" post which actually featured absolutely not even a single, shivery ghost. So how about some ghosts in this post instead? Goofy Ghost is a funny little two-page fright filler originally presented in the Jan. '47 debut issue of Eerie #1, (published by Avon.) And despite the final panel promising more to come from GG, he actually never again ever materialized, except in reprints of this same exact two pager. But up first, let's check in with rad cad, Roger Dodger, as him and his gorgeous gal pal hep cat harpies attempt to throw a costume shindig in the 'ol haunted Brunswick manor! From the Nov. '48 issue of Exciting Comics #64, highlighted by some really great girly art by hep cap daddio, Al Hartley, himself!

In Roger Dodger, how many late 1940's slang terms did the writer come up with? Better yet, how many of these slang terms would go over the heads of today's comic readers?

For Goofy Ghost, it is a shame he was only a one shot, but how much could you do with a cowardly ghost? About a decade later Timmy the Timid Ghost would appear on comics stands. maybe Timmy was Goofy's nephew/son?

These were fun tales with a ghostly element to them, thanks for the posts.

You highlighted a panel in Roger Dodger and while reading the story, I have to say that panel felt really out of place. Same artist, same style, but it feels really foreign; maybe a bit too sexualized for this type of comic.

That said, lots of credit to Hartley here. The costumes on the splash were duplicated in the story, while most of the story could be considered talking head the cameras are interesting and moving, it's just a real professional and entertaining job. And damn it, Hep Cat, you made me spend a couple minutes trying to figure out if "kibble" really was slang (as far as I can tell, not.)

I love the look of the owl in that last story!

I love keeping up with the costumes in party comics. These are neat, too: A knight, a Robin Hood, a vaquero, the rare boy in a cat costume, a momentarily glimpsed cowgirl, a genie, two Spanish ruff guys--one clown, one musketeer--and, in a fit of trendy specificity, Carmen Miranda. Oh, and also the only ghost in the story. I mighta let the poor guy in the suit of armor tackle the old man. As it is, that nut lugged that all kit out to a dance party for nothing.

For me, the star of this show is that second page of Goofy Ghost. All those softly shaded and color-coded panels are definitely my type. I feel like some of the figures have a Virgil Parch vibe. Especially the boss.
