A Man's Guide to Outdoor Cooking
If you say "Mayrose" here in St. Louis MO, most people over the age of 40 (like myself) immediately think of the classic local TV/radio jingle sung by stop motion animated butcher Marty Mayrose in his warm baritone voice, "I'm a meat man and a meat man knows, the finest meats, ma'am, are Mayrose" (see my vinyl advertising toy figure photo at the end of this post!) But before Marty came along, the St. Louis Independent Packing Co., which produced the Mayrose meat brand, published this great Vic Take illustrated BBQ masters guide in 1955, showing you how to do it all on the grill! Pretty much everything is covered, including sides and sauces-- and on top of that it's really just a super swell fun book too!

All these clip arts are clever and well done, but I'm particularly moved by the juxtaposition between the friendly cartoon grill man and the constellation of hand-tinted halftoned meat photos on page six. I wish there was a lot more of that sort of thing going on here.
Agreed! Bonus points Everytime for combining illustrated characters with photography. I like page 15 the best though, that wood grain butcher board background / border really sends me!

I always get so geeked over the packaging images. I love the illustrations too - but man - that old packaging is so cool.
I agree! This packaging used to really jump off the shelf too. Mayrose is still around today, but they've blandified their packaging and even made Marty less interesting somehow with a needless redesign / update.
Does anyone know if Marty is designed after anyone?
That would be interesting to know, ANON... googling his name just turns up info about the vinyl figure and other assorted merchandise and display materials.
