Daytime Sun, Nightime Fun

This is one of the better vintage Las Vegas brochures I've stumbled upon in all my years collecting. It's seriously jammed packed with the cutest cartoon art and photos, (lots of cool lettering styles too!), that I insist we zoom in on certain portions of every page to get some closer looksies! Okay now, who wants to go to Vegas with me? Daytime sun, and nighttime fun, indeed!

I know it's not, but the girl on the cover resembles Annette Funicello.

I'm not sure that woman knows how to play tennis!

I love that band picture. Matching suits, a room probably 90% cigarette smoke, playing some straight-rhythm version of salsa, where the downbeat is punctuated by the ringing of slot machines. I can smell it now!

I wouldn't mind going to Las Vegas, provided it was the Vegas of the 80's and earlier. Las Vegas is ruining itself with $9 for bottled water, $10 for a shot of whiskey, I would be flat broke before I put a coin in a one armed bandit. And of course, many casinos did away with coins for slot machines.

The last time I went to a casino (one in PA) I exchanged $20 at the cashier booth for a slip of paper good for $20, which I fed into the slot machines to try my luck, which was bad luck for me on that day.

If by some way followers of AEET and THOIA could go back in time to the heyday of Vegas, the early 60's for example, that would be a trip of a lifetime, especially since silver coins were still circulating until 1965 or so.

Imagine seeing the big stars back then performing live, now that would be the icing on the cake of a 1960's Las Vegas trip. Now if we could only persuade Dr. Who or Doc Brown and his DeLorean to take us on a day trip to Vegas...

This is a lovely juxtaposition of photo and clip art elements, tied together by color. I love the very idea. My favorite element of the cover is probably those showgirls sitting on the big dice. But on the inside I am most taken with the roulette wheel--an apotheosis of the style here, as the photo inserts literally become abstract color blurs as the wheel turns. Fabulous!

(And I'm still chuckling about the tennis lady, Brian. Good catch!)
