The Gas Cook Book for Young People by Laclede Gas is a fun little booklet from 1958 loaded with simple food ideas that you, the lazy parent, can now have the kids concoct instead (as you lay on the couch watching entire TV show seasons on Netflix --I'm catching up on The Killing Season 3 while Zander whips me up some delicious Breakfast Muffins - see page 8!) Some of these might come in handy on Turkey day too this Thursday-- so come on, quit stressing about the holidays and put your offspring to work! Art lovers enjoy Pres Bagent's oddly cute illo style.

wow these illustrations really are neat! i love the chicken and pig all geeked out about cooking their own foodstuffs and the boy and girl doing their jobs (measuring flour and setting the table) with their eyes closed. but man that second to last page with the girl trying the food from the dutch oven with her eye rolled back is kinda freaky! both styles of the kids are interesting and super cute but yeah they're a little odd - and some of them border on creepy! a couple of them could even make decent horror movie kids :)
and i really love all the little food illustrations! that pineapple is great!
I always think this red-cheeked illustration style is super cute, but rarely do the people look quite this embarrassed. I kept writing narratives for the characters as I browsed this catalog. Most of them just discovered their parents' wedding night photos discretely hidden between the pages of a cookbook. Can they still eat the food from that cookbook? They are still trying to decide.
They're almost like little living ventriloquist dolls-- of evil!
Check out the bowl of blood she's drinking on page 2!
they totally are! and yeah - that blood bowl of evil pic is the creepiest one. aside from the sip from the spoon of hell sideways glance pic at the end.
The girl on page two looks a bit like one of the ventriloquist dummies from Dead Silence, or else it is Lucy from Peanuts who finally reached her breaking point with Linus and his blanket (could the blanket be the tablecloth in the picture?).
Ha! That's Woodstock all plucked and baked on page 15
I have this little cookbook, given to me as a 5 year old. I loved this cookbook, and even made a couple of the recipes. This little cookbook brings back fond memories of playing house with my dolls--not at all creepy! The girl on page 2 is eating tomato soup, not blood--Heaven forbid! There's nothing evil about this book unless you are viewing it through evil eyes.
We are of course all totally evil, Joy, but we know it's cute too! :)
