Florida Ads! Ads! Ads! --wish you were here! From the Winter 1953-'54 issue of The Highway Traveler (compliments of Greyhound Lines) and bursting with brilliant design, illustration, and typography -- and best of all girls girls girls!
I love how they could fit just enough info in a small ad and make it look good, like in the Wofford Beach & Silver Springs ads -- not easy to do. And the ink "rays" ruled with a rapidograph in the Ellinor Village ad would have driven me crazy.
I'm glad you're interested in posting material like this. Thanks.
Man I totally love love love that magic carpet illustration on the first image. It was like having my dessert first! As for the mindless drudgery of penning in those radiant lines, KL--that kind of thing was, for some reason, the sort of nutty detail work I always enjoyed--only not with a ruler. I could get probably something pretty close freehand, though. Many's the night I sat up crosshatching for hours on end back in my youth.
Mr Calvin: Stippling I could do for hours (making those little dot points close together for texture). Not ruling & cross-hatching. Most places I worked insisted on using rules on tape and shading on sheets.

i love all the little people! :)
I'm not going to Woffard Beach, there are women falling out of the sky from a 100 feet up. It seems pretty dangerous!

That's the EXACT reason that I am going there... can't think of a better way to go, personally.

I have a color version of the first ad around here somewhere, Mr. C... I'll post it if I ever find it.
