Bathing Beauties

It might sound weird to some, but it's actually too goddamn hot to go swimming on this freakishly sweltering 4th of July-- *pants! But that ain't gonna stop me from enjoying (and sharin') the sizzlin' sight of a trio of sweet lil bathing beach beauties! This was a nice collection I spotted at an antique mall last week (didn't buy 'em, if you're wondering), and I just liked the way they were arranged in the case, along with that equally interesting painting leaned up there in the background. Unlike the rare, and much higher quality, earlier era bisque bathing beauties from Germany, these porcelain gals were made in midcentury Japan, and are somewhat common in this time zone, --though these three with their unique poses and lovely, glossy paint jobs were new to me! Post rounded out with an adorable old beach post card I found recently as well!

Concerning it being too hot to go swimming, I was at my local 7-11 and I overheard a customer say just that to the 7-11 manager, their pool water feels like warm bathwater. When summer temperatures make even swimming uncomfortable, you know its bad out.

I like the ceramic bathing beauties from days gone by, but with those prices its no wonder you said 'bye bye.'

For the guy drawn on the post card, the artist isn't Rudy Palais but the guy in the water sure sweats like one of Palais' characters.

I always love how these porcelain figures can have such a good wistful look. They really nail the emotions on the faces. That has to be really hard on such a small scale.

Good survivors the colors are vibrant. I also really love that painting, with its scratchy surface and kind of strange juxtaposition of bathing beauty and static flowers.

I was thinking the very same thing about it being too hot to swim (not that I have anywhere to do that, anyway!) — but I’d brave the heat to lolligag on a beach with these gals! Thanks for stopping to share them with us :)

That is such a great display. It's amazing how well that painting matches up with the figures. There's a real art to the presentation going on here; but I've often wondered if things like this don't backfire a little. I'd hate to buy the women and break up the lovely diorama. It'd be different if they were sitting an a Wyoming welcome center ash tray surrounded by collectible spoons and branded pocket knives. But like this, everything looks so nice in situ that I'd have to leave it as is.

I'm glad you got pictures!

I will always find the time to stop and share images of an art deco style Charlie’s Angels trio!
