Witch Hazel

Halloween means witches, owls, skeletons, and all sorts of green scaly winged things! Over at THOIA you know that translates into precode 50's horror at its ghouliest! Over here at AEET though, it means a busted broomful of laughs. So let's see what wicked 'ol Witch Hazel is up to with Halloween a'brewin' on her hilarious, distant horizon. From the May 1948 issue of Giggle Comics #53, highlighted with some very funny art by Bob Wickersham.

Too bat there wasn't an enchanted Uber available for Witch Hazel, though she should have taken a page from Baba Yaga and made the cauldron fly.

Great Halloween hi-jinx fun Karswell. Thanks.

Fun comic, for us readers anyway! Poor Witch Hazel.

The panelling on this is really interesting! There's a splash on the first page, but then it sticks to a 4 panel layout (with rough panels) for the rest. I wonder if, because it was a funny book, they were trying to emulate the strips of the day and stick with a 4 panel layout?

There's some great art in this, I like the witch queenie and the little goblin. The owl looks like Kelly lended a hand, and, honestly, if you are going to pick up how to draw funny animals you certainly couldn't do better!

This is so wild looking. At first I was so distracted trying to figure out the weird lettering that I almost didn't notice how cute the story was. I had to start over. Do these always look like they were lettered by somebody with a label maker? When I got to page two, first panel--"Yippee! Hooray!"--I thought, okay, here's the reason they've gone with some kind of typing here--this hand lettering is terrible! But then at the end, on page eight, the captions are all pretty well done, also by hand, and the song the skeletons are singing is excellent. GO figure. I suspect some kind of seasonal possession.

I love these. Between the vintage mag illustrations and the funnybook-style spookers, AAET always really nails my kinda Halloween vibe.
