Yep, it's an abruptly silly superhero spoof via the October 1976 issue of Rock-Bottom Comics #23, aka the October 1976 Special Funny Pages issue of National Lampoon. Now imagine what YOU could do with this sort of any-bug-you-choose power! Golden Age hero comics are always such an easy target...

Stay-At-Home Amusement Park

Driving passed a Six Flags the other day, it occurred to me that one of the saddest things in the world is a theme park closed due to an unfortunate, world crisis pandemic. Hopefully, it's only temporary, but in the meantime, never fear-- that's why AEET and the April 1978 issue of National Lampoon Magazine #97 is here-- as clearly there's tons'o thrilling razzle dazzle to still be had in the comfort of your own home! Why, I've already visited Kitchen Land a half dozen times today alone!

What, Me Funny?

One great satire mag satirizes another, as the October 1971 issue of National Lampoon presented this astoundingly spot-on, 15 page parody of Mad Magazine. No one was safe either, from god Gaines to mad man Martin, Fold-Ins to even the letters column, and with lots of big gun illustrators like Joe Orlando, John Romita, and Ernie Colon (to name just a few) stepping in to severely call 'ol Alfred out while creating incredible imitations of classic Mad bullpen artists and writers. I have to wonder how Mad felt about all of this? I mean, as much as I love 70's Mad, NP does have some rather valid points on the direction the magazine was heading during this era.

Magical Misery Tour

We're nearing the final hours of the Magical Misery Tour that is 2019 --I mean seriously, has there been a worse year in my lifetime? It's hard to say, but it looks like we do finally have a winner here. Yep, I kicked off the year with an awesome injury that not only cost me my day job, but it seriously set me back on a number of travel plans and projects that I'm only just now finally getting caught up on in the upcoming, hopeful light of 2020. So heres to a better year for everyone, good times, good health, and good fucking riddance bye-bye 2019. And thanks to the October 1971 issue of National Lampoon Magazine Vol. 1 #19 for this funny Beatles parody too!

At the Movies: The Splatter Version + Veep Show

I struggled for a bit about where to post this stuff, here or over at THE HORRORS OF IT ALL, and ultimately decided here was just fine, and then I'd simply link it at the end of the current precode post over at THOIA as well. But this is a great "Horror and Fantasy Issue" from an 80's National Lampoon issue (more coming in the next post as well), and it's not only a super spoof of Siskel and Ebert's "At the Movies", but also on precode horror comics (and presidents) and Creepshow, making it the perfect "thumbs up" must read for this Halloween / politically shit-caked season!

The Worsted Monster by Edward Gorey (a play!)

That's right-- why just sit around freezing with boredom all winter when instead while trapped indoors you could be theatrically productive and putting on your own tiny stage productions! And we can't think of a better way to kick off your homespun DIY season of live performances than with The Worsted Monster, written by Edward Gorey. Efficiency is key as the script is thankfully only 2 pages long, and meanwhile, your visual budget is next to nothing as you will also already have everything required: full color back-drops / sets / scenery, props, and yes, even the actors already in costume --just cut everything out with scissors and manipulate them around on a table or windowsill-- however / wherever you find fit (see more helpfully hilarious production notes located at the end of the script.)

And all of this comes courtesy of the June 1974 "Rainy Day Sunday Funbook Issue" of National Lampoon Magazine-- why, even the cover art is by Edward Gorey too!

Persimmons

A few years back I picked up a crumbling stack of hilarious old issues of Ballyhoo Magazine from the 30's. Ballyhoo was pretty much the National Lampoon of its day, full of hilarious gags, stories, tons of great cartoon art, and fake ads, like this one for Persimmons Beds, Springs, & Mattresses. Unfortunately, this particular ad is in a million brittle pieces, pulled loose from its original issue (and found floating in a separate one) and it's possibly incomplete. But I've managed to salvage a few of the cutely illustrated panels, as well as a bit of the text that reads as follows:

"Sleeping LIKE THIS is the bunk-- lantern slides prove in convincing studies by bed specialists at Hot Springs. Sleeping "like a horse" has always been considered the ideal form of rest. Until now. Now it is known that nobody sleeps like a horse except horses and pony chorus girls. And besides, our investigators have proved that people who sleep like horses are troubled with nightmares which necessitates sleeping with a Colt under your pillow." Very funny stuff (Nov. '32.)
