McCall's Home Catalog '61 (PART ONE)

McCall's Home Catalog from 1961 is over 100 pages of amazing illustrations. I'm not really sure what else to say about it except this: if you enjoy incredibly lovely, colorful drawings of unbearably attractive women, then this is the magazine for you. These 12 pages are just a very small sampling, and I tried to focus the scans on summery styles (of course posting this in September is the best time to do it-- arghhh!) Anyway, I'll have more from this collection throughout the month, keep checking back for more-- especially you artists out there looking for cute girl reference for your own art! I'm still shaking my fist at the "artist" who thought inking on the cover was a good idea!! Arghhh 2! >:(

Now those are some styles! And none of this plus-size model and mannequin nonsense we have today.

You're right! Only skinny women should be represented in the media. Imagine anyone wanting to depict all body types for everyone to enjoy instead of just a few. What utter nonsense!

Women with meat on their bones-- how absurd!

PLEASE NOTE: we at AEET love everyone of all shapes, sizes, and colors. Variety, people!!

A couple of details I would like to point out, if I may-

There is nothing wrong with showing summer fashion in September since in many parts of the country summer weather will stick around until the week before Halloween.

On the cover of the magazine, the eyeliner and eyebrows of the model in the center seem to possess a proto-goth look, either that or the model is possessed by Elvira. (If the model opened her mouth a little wider I think her fangs would show!)

The last page is neat, I wonder what neat projects were listed in the Do-It Book.

Great find once again Karswell!

Yeah, that was the previous owner of this catalog getting fancy with a ballpoint pen, me thinks...

More from this great catalog later this month, keep checking back! :) thanks for the comments

There's something strange about the juxtaposition of those water-colored figures and the real photo of a model on some of these pages, as if I must slip through the Uncanny Valley for my eyes to adequately adjust between the two qualities. Like walking out of a darkened matinee into the late summer light. So I think perhaps I understand the previous owner's urge to address this with a Bic pen on the cover, a desperate attempt to somehow right the disparity by further corrupting the disquieting near-reality of the cover girl.
