So a huge part of Valentine's Date Night is planning the perfect night out on the town, which includes, of course, finding the perfect place for a delicious dinner! And umm, helloooo! You have less than a week to figure it all out and get that restaurant reservation secured! If I was alive in the 1940's and living in NYC, I think I'd be heading to Majors Cabin Grill on 33 West 33rd St. I don't know, it just looks like a fun place, and I love the the cover of this vintage menu I found, plus their sign out front is amazing. And then afterwards with our bellies full, maybe we'll take a stroll up Broadway to check out the fashionable department store window displays (loaded with gorgeous 40's mannequins!) at Gimbels, Saks, and Macy's! What's the perfect gift for that special someone on a night like this? A diamond necklace perhaps? There's too much to choose from! I suppose the night would conclude with something extra loud and raucous in Times Square, --because how great is that zoomed-in dance club illustration, anyway? (I think we'll skip the boxing match!) The truth of the matter is, it's 2025 and I'll likely be picking up a bucket of KFC on the way home from work, eventually settling in for a night of Regular Show repeats on Hulu with Z (hmmph-hmm[h, tsk tsk!) If I'm feeling extra inspired I'll even wear my KFC brass collector necklace from 1960. It's actually not as sad as it sounds...

That Kentucky Fried charm is amazing. So well crafted and tiny. Makes me want to see a Colonel Sanders penny.
I want to see what kind of early mid-century food Majors Cabin Grill was serving up (and what those early mid-century big city prices looked like). I definitely dig the cancan dancers and would probably not, myself, skip the fight card either. Not in the forties.
In 2025, we'll be enjoying Valentines' Day room service here at our swank hotel. I was unable to get reservations as late as we blew into town.
You are fortunate to have a KFC near you, the only one near me turned into a Taco H--- I mean Taco Bell. I have to go to Popeye's to satisfy my fried chicken cravings.
That Charm necklace is really great. It is a shame fast food places don't offer such well made trinkets nowadays.
I myself didn't know there was a Gimbel's in New York. I thought (wrongly) that Gimbel's was the main department store in the Philadelphia/Pennsylvania area.
Great find once again, Karsell. Thanks for sharing.
Meant to say Karswell, typo on my part.
This post kind of makes me sad. I like visiting sights (like this one!) so show old Americana ... back when you'd have to have a theme, a cool look, or a big neon sign, to draw in the customers. You had to have a style that separated you from the rest.
Yes, modern America has its conveniences ... if you go to one restaurant in a chain you know what to expect, and here, it could be anything. But I miss the race to do something weird or something different or something unique.
I guess the bottom line is I adore the Majors Cabin Grill frontage!
I know what you mean, Brian. Before the franchisee sold his McDonald's near me, he had local sports memorabilia on display in glass cases. Dummy me, I never thought to take pictures of the cool stuff he had on display.
