February 11th, 1959

I found some brass candlesticks in my attic that were carefully wrapped in an old STL newspaper dated February 11th, 1959. Thankfully it wasn't the sports section-- it was all sadly forgotten funnies and even a few movie / TV ads! So here ya go, some of the silly comic highlights, (a particularly nice bite of Jack Kirby and Wally Wood's Sky Masters too) and a couple of local ads. Man, I'd love to see The Spider, aka Earth vs. the Spider, with Brain Eaters at the drive-in! (Scanned at 300%)

What a find!

I like that spaghetti lady! I also like the idea of chipping-in on the carload price for the triple feature down at the ol' drive-in. I feel less enthusiastic about the uncut adult probing I'd get at the Apollo.

The brittle old newspaper is much more of a keeper than the brass candlesticks!

Thanks for the post, Karswell.

Finding the old newspaper is like digging up a time capsule, some real neat print ads and comics that are still humorous even today.

Cool stuff. I love finding old newspapers. I never knew about the Kirby/Wood Sky Masters. Love it!

I remember Mr. Mum with its hard angular drawing. In the daily panels he just witnessed the gag with very mild surprise (in contrast to the strange dread of bystanders in Addams cartoons). Sundays usually ended with him going to a "Health Bar" for a strong non-alcoholic drink to recover from whatever he saw.

In fact, I remember big Sunday comic sections.

Sigh.

Wow - this is so awesome! And the scans came out so good! I found some old newspapers around useless nicknacks I a while back and I couldn't get the wrinkles out of the paper.

I love the spaghetti lady! And the carnival backdrop in the Circus of Love ad. And the mermaid painting! But man that Sky Masters comic is hilarious. What a SNAFU!!
