"You're a Young Lady Now" is an informative booklet published by the Kimberly-Clark Corp (Kotex) in 1952 and deals with issues relative to that certain time of the month. Now on one hand it's a very helpful guide for girls on the verge of becoming a woman, but on the other hand it's also a great example of how perfect artist Irving Nurick was at precisely capturing just the right cute and clean visuals required for a booklet and advertising campaign such as this.

i don't know, i feel like i've wandered into the auditorium for the wrong film...
and that's why this blog is called "and everything else too."
Not sure which old-timey sentiment flabbergasts me the most. It's either this painfully wholehearted refusal to admit the anatomical function, or even the physical reality, of the human crotch:
"when the fluids are not needed they flow away through an opening in the lower front part of your body."
...or it's this blithely misplaced finger pointing that ignores the very possibility of natural hormonal mood swings:
"Many girls imagine they feel worse than they actually do. They get into a dither just by thinking too much about themselves."
If I was a twelve year old girl, I'm pretty sure I'd know by now to just ignore any unpleasant feelings associated with bleeding copiously from my belly button. But the art is super nice!
I had the modern updated 1970's version of that book, which included a nice diagram of a uterus. I did not want it to ever happen to me, but one day when I was 12 it did and has been bringing me tons of joy ever since. They don't talk about PMS!
LOL @ "If I was a twelve year old girl, I'm pretty sure I'd know by now to just ignore any unpleasant feelings associated with bleeding copiously from my belly button."
sorry fellows, but I also have to add: "watery fluids and a small amount of blood that leaves the body a little at a time over three to seven days."
BWAHAHAHAHAAAAA!!!!!
Oh, how they tried to pretty it up! I wonder how many girls thought something was wrong as hell with them when it was more than "a small amount a little at a time."
Sorry--my specialty is Way Too Much Information!
Ahh, I love when I post something that flabbergasts, haha... you of course make all kinds of excellent points Mr C, though I was seriously giving this booklet the benfit of the doubt what with it being from 1952.
I also do appreciate the female perspective on these recent "girl oriented" posts, so thank you kindly, Facey Strange. Got another one for the ladies (and dudes) coming up next.
