Tell-Tale Comic Strip Balloons

As long as I have my MAD reprints out (see the Jack Davis hilarity of our last post HERE, --and scans this time are from the "SUPER MAD" paperback collection from 1979), let's dig into some additional side splitters written by Don Edwing, with illustrations by another all-time favorite artist of mine, the great Bob Clarke. So okay, the purpose of this excursion into the "True-to-Form Dept." is to probe cartoon characters' innermost thoughts and emotions-- but in the grand MAD scheme of things, to add a Freudian dimension to the stars of the strips! Very funny stuff.

(Originally presented in the July 1973 issue of MAD #160.)

Wishful Thinking

Hilarious series of "wishful thinkings" originally scripted by Paul Peter Porges for, I think, the October 1974 issue of MAD #170, (these scans come from "The Eggs-Rated MAD" paperback collection from 1981), and made monumentally even more magnificent by the masterful hand of the one and only, Jack Davis. Thinking wishfully that my hero hadn't passed away this week too, but ever so happy to have a lifetime of amazing art to still marvel, laugh, shiver, and drool over.

R.I.P. Jack Davis... gone at 91 years old, and STILL gone too soon.

Slimmer Summer Simmer

We might have overdone it a bit, stretching our meat and sparing our sweets in the last few temp tasting posts-- now it's time (unfortunately) to get our asses in shape! This handful of cute illustrations found in the Better Homes and Gardens "Eat and Stay Slim" hardcover collection from 1968 shows us how to reduce and figure our calorie needs, plus simple and effective food exchange ideas for menu planning, eating out, exercising, and how to just stay slim in general. It's freakin' hot out there this summer-- so come on! (FYI: If anyone's interested in the artist's name, you might need to clean your glasses off to read it in one of the images below.) And not to confuse anyone even further, but I'm creating this post as I finish off the last piece of a homemade Fruity Pebble Cereal "No Bake" Cheesecake --so, whatev, right? Right.

Stretching Meat

In 1943, Betty Crocker assembled a fun little booklet called "Your Share", featuring 52 menus, 226 recipes, and 369 hints on how to prepare appetizing, healthful meals containing AVAILABLE ingredients. I say AVAILABLE, because this book on food buying, preparation, planning, and serving was published during the war time era, when certain foods weren't readily, or easily obtainable-- (hence why we're "stretching, "extending", "glamorizing", "spreading", and making "the most" and / or making things "go further" in the imagery featured below.) Cute illustrations throughout, though no artist credit unfortunately-- and lots more still to see, which means I'll be stretching this post into a two-parter, so check back later this week for more!
