Avon Bed of Nails Comb

Last month I revealed that my grandmother was a wig design specialist for Zayre department stores in the 70's (more on that here at a later date, I'm still digging up all the photos.) Well, one other thing she did, not surprisingly, was sell Avon product. Everyone knows all about the perfume and endless beauty enhancers that Avon produced, but for me, it was their line of fun, kitschy kids stuff that made having an Avon Grandma in the 70's a truly awesome thing indeed (example: see my Miss Lollypop Powder Mitt post HERE!) Okay now, the Avon Bed of Nails Comb, aka The Guru of Good Grooming, introduced in 1978, may cause some of you to gasp by todays standards of correct Indian representation, but when I was a kid, this comb and the funny little box it came in was one of my favorite things ever. That ouch face! Those band-aids!

I'd make that same face too while trying to comb out a difficult hair knot.

I had this. From a great-grandma that did all her Christmas shopping through Avon.

Kitschy maybe, but high quality nonetheless. Their "Peanuts" line was always top-notch.

The band-aids are a nice touch, though it's interesting how they completely missed part of the vest with the painting, and the painting is over-all pretty good!

I also like the big toes on the mold. The face of the mold is actually crazier than the box art, which is kind of amazing!

Yeah, in the box art he seems all like "how did I get into this mess?" but in the mold he's totally pissed that you're waking him up just to comb your hair. "You again?!?"

I didn't have any Avon relatives, so most of this stuff is new to me. Tupperware on the other hand....

I didn't have any Avon sales relatives either, but I got Avon stuff for many holidays. I def got some of the Peanuts character knick knacks - I remember a Snoopy brush in particular. But I've never seen this.

And yeah Mr. C, it is hilarious how on the comb he actually looks like he's pissed cause he was disturbed from a peaceful slumber on his spiky bed.

I remember the Peanuts hair accessories, Charlie Brown was a brush and wore a cowboy hat, if I'm not mistaken
