Kaiju and Robots

More from the 1980 Montgomery Wards christmas catalog-- this time it's giant monsters and metal men to the wish list rescue! If you owned even one thing from this page then you were cool in my book. I had two of them. Can you guess which ones?

Nuff said. Seriously.

I have Rodan and Godzilla *now* :)

I like the Krusher -- obviously a hollow rubber figure that you could squeeze and then seal to force him to stick to his shape. Very much in the Stretch Arm-Strong type of toy, but never heard of him until today.

ROM, I liked the comic, never had the toy. Most of what is "known" about ROM was created by Mantlo -- the toy had next to no backstory.

Awesome! I had all of them except Rodan. I had several Godzillas, in fact. Every time I lost his fist we had to get a new one. Likely still have one or two left-handed 'Zillas in a box somewhere. My life with Mazinger, if I recall correctly, was the exact opposite. I only managed to get all three large Shogun Warriors the one time, and soon enough I had only that one plastic fist remaining, the rest of the Warrior getting lost somewhere along the way. I remember I made an art project with it my sophomore or junior year of high school. I pulled the clown head out of a jack-in-the-box and painted the whole thing black. When the little crank got around to "pop goes the weasel" then--sproingg--BLACK POWER! God, my teachers didn't know what the fuck to do with me.

I had the kaiju too... unfortunately both were destroyed in the great 4th of July Blow My Toys Up For Fun Fest '82 which I immediately regretted the day after. Ahhhh well...

So thanks for the two comments here chums! I posted this image and the Horror Heroes image of our previous post at The Vintage Monster Toy group on Facebook this week and both have a combined number of likes and comments well into the 200's... guess that shows you how much blogs have fallen by the wayside over the years.

My Dragun is the one from when I was young; I have it complete with the box and all the components. My Mazinga is also complete (w/box). My Raydeen has repop delta-wing but that's complete. Gaiking has crappy stickers but is otherwise complete. Godzilla is pretty mint. My Rodan has a chip, but that's hard to find so I'll deal with it.

I only have 5 Jumbo Shoguns now, no boxes: Mazinger, Gaiking, Dragun, Raydeen, and Daimos... I regretfully sold my Grendizer a few years ago after upgrading him with his missing accessories. He did help fund a trip out to SDCC though :) I still have all the smaller die cast Shogun robots though, mostly complete, maybe some missiles missing.

I'm currently on the hunt for one, which is missing it's missile, but there's a guy who has a FB page "shogun plastics" that recreates all those.

The Rodan was a crazy find, but there seems to be Godzilla's everywhere (with working tongues and fists) on eBay. Not cheap, but not ultra expensive. I think those are pretty common, along with dragun, mazinga, and raydeen to a lesser extend.

A Grendizer/Goldorak within my price range would be an even rarer find :)

I paid $200 for my Grendizer, which was a bargain even though it was missing the shoulder axes (which I eventually found) --and really the only reason I even found it was because I was living on Oahu at the time... I don't think I've ever seen one in the mainland USA for sale anywhere

I have Godzilla, Krusher and ROM. I had the chance to buy Rodan years ago but didn't. I haven't seen one since.
Hey Karswell, how are you? Happy belated New Years 2016!
