The First Book of Space Travel

We've been traveling all over the US this month, but now it's time to aim a little higher with our eyes on the future-- and I mean the future of 1953 and OUTER SPACE! Written and illustrated by Jeanne Bendick, with a Space Consultant assist from Hal Goodwin, The First Book of Space Travel (Franklin Watts, 1953) is a truly awesome 60+ page book full of everything you'll ever need to know about journeying to the final frontier and beyond. The select illustrative highlights here only begin to scratch the surface, and in some cases, I left in excerpts of fun text, further revealing how essential this book is for those of you planning a life someday among the stars!

Cape Coral Gardens '65

Fully painted, fantastic artwork highlights this Cape Coral Gardens travel brochure dated 1965, as we continue on our wintertime cross country vacation tourist trek to warmer climates! Cape Coral Gardens, which opened to the public in 1964, was many attractions in one: thrilling action and serene beauty, dramatic fountains, sleepy lagoons, 40,000+ rose bushes, dancing fountains, reflecting pools, tranquil lakes, romantic waterfalls, Polynesian gardens, frisky porpoise shows, and loads of exotic birds and flowers. A spectacular showcase by day-- an enchanted wonderland by night! Unfortunately, they closed their doors for good in 1971 --you can read lots more about this great "lost" attraction HERE and HERE.

S. Dakota Lake Region (Brochure Art)

In our last post we visited some fun stuff in South Dakota, like The Flintstones Bedrock City (click HERE), so now let's see a little bit more of the SD Lake Region, or more specifically, the attractive art that highlights this brochure (60s? or 70's?) published by the Northeast South Dakota Lake Region Chamber of Commerce. If outdoorsin' it is your cup o'tea, this looks like the place for you. Me? Not so outdoorsy... I just like the art in this brochure.
