My word, that is some seriously deft crosshatching. It's so uniform, it seems like it must have been achieved mechanically, but then that seems like a super waste of time and tediousness too, so I think Bob must have done it with his bare hands after all. Hm. Maybe he used a comb?
Those 50s and 60s Ladies Circle mags are seriously the best! Awesome illustrations!
