Whoooo's ready? I know I am! A full month of spooky, kooky, and maybe a few pukey moments too (this blog contains EVERYthing, ya know!) Let the 2014 Halloween festivities boo-gin!
I totally forgot to mention this is scanned from a 60's copy of Jack and Jill (I'll have the exact issue info for everyone in the next post), this issue is full of great stuff :)
October at last! Oktoberfest is fun for the beer drinking crowd but it can't compete with All Hallows. Bring on the Jack o' lanterns, the costumes, the candy, the haunted houses. Its the best time of the year!
In honor of the greatest month of the year, here are a few poems to celebrate October and Halloween-
Black and Gold
Everything is black and gold, Black and gold, tonight; Yellow pumpkins, yellow moon, Yellow candlelight;
Jet-black cat with golden eyes, Shadows black as ink, Firelight blinking in the dark With a yellow blink.
Black and gold, black and gold, Nothing in between - When the world turns black and gold, Then it's Halloween!
Nancy Byrd Turner
Halloween's a sudden BOO!! And just as quick a scream: Laughing in the scary dark, Loving friendly fright. On Halloween, witches come true; Wild ghosts escape from dreams. Each monster dances in the park, Eating candy like a shark- Now kiss and say goodnight!

It's Just Halloween"
Weird-looking creatures, Can always be seen. Don't be afraid for It's just Halloween.
Hundreds of specters, With goblins between. Don't be afraid for It's just Halloween.
Crackling bonfires Light up the weird scene. Don't be afraid for It's just Halloween.
HALLOWE'EN
Pixie, kobold, elf, and sprite All are on their rounds to-night,- In the wan moon's silver ray Thrives their helter-skelter play.
Fond of cellar, barn,or stack, True unto the almanac, They present to credulous eyes Strange hobgoblin mysteries.
Cabbage-stomps-straws wet with dew- Apple-skins, and chestnuts too, And a mirror for some lass, Show what wonders come to pass.
Doors they move, and gates they hide, Mischiefs that on moon-beams ride Are their deeds, and by their spells, Love records its oracles.
Don't we all, of long ago, By the ruddy fireplace glow, In the kitchen and the hall, Those queer, coofllke pranks recall?
Eery shadows were they then- But to-night they come again; Were we once more but sixteen, Precious would be Halloween.
-Joel Benton
October's bright blue weather
O SUNS and skies and clouds of June, And flowers of June together, Ye cannot rival for one hour October's bright blue weather;
When loud the bumble-bee makes haste, Belated, thriftless vagrant, And Golden-Rod is dying fast, And lanes with grapes are fragrant;
When Gentians roll their fringes tight To save them for the morning, And chestnuts fall from satin burrs Without a sound of warning;
When on the ground red apples lie In piles like jewels shining, And redder still on old stone walls Are leaves of woodbine twining;
When all the lovely wayside things Their white-winged seeds are sowing, And in the fields, still green and fair, Late aftermaths are growing;
When springs run low, and on the brooks, In idle golden freighting, Bright leaves sink noiseless in the hush Of woods, for winter waiting;
When comrades seek sweet country haunts, By twos and twos together, And count like misers, hour by hour, October's bright blue weather.
O suns and skies and flowers of June, Count all your boasts together, Love loveth best of all the year October's bright blue weather.
(As you can tell, I'm rather partial to October)
Sorry for the long post but it is time to celebrate October and all its glories!
From Mestiere "Was Joel Benton trying to rhyme "eyes" and "mysteries"? "Mister-eyes"?" I have no clue, I just found the poem from the internet from a blog called 'Old haunts'. That blog is gone now, but like the old haunts of long ago, its eerie half remembered legends live on.

ReplyDeleteI'd recommend -- if you want to hook-up with the sexy witch at a costume party -- that you pick something better than the skin-tight cat suit!
ReplyDeleteMaybe he's looking for different kinds of thrills?
