It's can't be all toys and monster sweatshirt prezzies --or can it?! Yes, apparently you've gotta eat too, so how about some wondrous assortment packs (or barrels) of cheeses, meats, jams and jellies, and oooo don't forget the CANDY! Which one is your favorite? Which ones won't get eaten at all? Most importantly-- WHO CUT THE CHEESE??!! (Montgomery Ward 1972 Xmas Catalog)
i want every. single. thing. on. these. pages.
ReplyDeletethe electric hot tray of cheeses is the freaking best!!!! but so is the barrel of cheeses, cookies and candy!!!! and the snack hound! and the fruit shaped ceramic jam jars!!
the barrel shaped coaster set is a little odd - but i wouldn't turn it away!!!
just a pile of the plain boxes of cheeses and meats strewn under the tree would be my idea of a perfect xmas morning surprise.
man i love this shit.
Yeah, those jam jars are fabulous. I'm also impressed that the meat set comes with little sauce bottles--way to think of everything (but I'm skeptical that's gonna be enough rye bread for the whole picnic).
ReplyDeleteI miss the prepackaged gift boxes section of the grocery store. These seem so dated, but they really shouldn't. I know that fancy, upmarket, um, markets arrange their own baskets with healthier-seeming selections, but there's nothing much more fetching than a cheese wheel made out of an array of mixed, colorfully foil-wrapped wedges--even if the cheeses inside did only consist of various shades of salty Velveeta.
Hickory Farms would be put to shame with the layout from this catalog!
ReplyDeleteOmaha Steaks might be fair competition, but when you factor in the jams and assorted extras, there is just no comparison.
Cabelas gourmet foods section might be a worthy contender, but the prices from 1972 just can't be beat (now if we could only find a working time machine so we can travel back to the early seventies, and then dig into these delicious goodies while listening to some smooth 70's tunes...)
I was shocked to discover that Hickory Farms is still around. The mall store versions all closed up a long time ago here in STL, but I just did a search and found there's one out in Chesterfield at the new outlet mall. I may have to swing by and see what they got! Some where there's a cheese barrel calling my name!
ReplyDeleteNear my way (North of Philadelphia PA) they had Hickory Farms sets for Christmas at the local Kmart (Yes, ol' big K is still alive & kicking, though for how much longer is anyone's guess.)
ReplyDeleteThe Giant Supermarket had Hickory Farms cheese but I didn't see the summer sausage offered. Kmart also had a brand of summer sausage/cheese set but I can't recall the company's name right now.
I believe the last of the K Marts have finally left my area...
