The Eat

We're still diggin' through the ever fabulous Esquire Handbook for Hosts hardcover from 1949 (see our previous post about the caricatured celebrity cover art HERE!) And speaking of the art, that's exactly what today's post is all about as well, because the unique, stylized hand of L. J. Allen returns for a perfectly proper look at the clever chapter headings and various other bits of quirky key art scattered throughout the first half of the book. Are you a man with the munchies, as well as one with cravings for drinky-dranks and throwing parties? Okay then, more on the latter in the coming month, but for now let's just focus on The Eat. And please note that the less than stellar quality of the images below were photographed and edited in a not so typical AEET fashion, -- but instead while I was laying in bed after spending 4 hours of my morning in root canal Hell. Yep, this was pretty much a test to see if I could even do it, (instead of waiting a few days until I was feeling better.) I eagerly await your reviews, complaints, and stupid suggestions.

Aww, cozy sick day sleepover edition of AEET! I hope you feel better asap, but also…if this is what you achieve on your worst day lawd help us when you’re 100%. What an incredible book, incredibly documented! I’m so intrigued by this…Laura Jean Allen?! How great is it that a woman illustrated the one cookbook aimed at men?!

I’m only truly 100% when eating pineapple upside down cake. It’s like Popeye and his spinach for super-powered muscle enhancement

Ahem, to clarfiy, the images in this post were photographed and edited on my phone, and not with my Mac, as usual...

Delightful. I like the interior work way better than the cover. I love 'em all, but the FISH page and that surreal--cubist?--BREAKFAST illustration are the tippy top. Today's stuff, and the images I trawled online the other day, have really made me a fan of this woman's work.

But ugh, a root canal? I've been there about three times myself. Can't say practice makes it any better. Hope your meds are up to the task of letting you forget all about it. And get well soon.

I love the steak picture, it's full of abstract weirdness. The cow's tail seems to be nailed to an invisible wall, have the table cloth floats in space and the salt and pepper are two dimensional containers, and the table legs -- that how the thing would approximate table legs.

It's great!
