I Heart Hot Springs, AR!

About 6 hours south of good 'ol STL MO is one heckuva getaway vacation destination spot-- Hot Springs, Arkansas! Located in the Ouachita Mountains, and just 55 miles southwest of Little Rock, this natural hot springs resort city (as the brochure states) was the first in the US to be set apart by a special act of Congress in 1832 for health and recreational purposes. I could go on and on about all of the fun things you can see, and do (and eat) there, but that's what the perfectly spot-on, beautiful illustrations in this midcentury, fold-out brochure are for! Well, here's a few anyway: biking, sports, shopping, and of course simply relaxing in one of the many hot springs-- just don't forget your swimsuit, as well as your bullet bra!

I like this art, it has a weird cut-out vibe to it, as if the foreground and the background don't belong together, which makes it pop in a kind of neat way.

Second to last, the water skiing picture is a good example. Maybe it's the same angle of both people? I don't know, but it has this paper doll look. It really gives a good ad type image (which I'd assume was the point!)

Great pin-up on the cover. I wonder if that was shot for this brochure or just picked up from clip art (yes, people that produced stuff like this had multiple images on hand.) Again, water at the bottom feels pasted in. There's so much that's strange the more you look at this!

Sure, sure, tennis, golf, horseback riding--all of these things are fine if you are the right sort (apparently, golf blows a lass' hair back harder than water skiing does). But what I'm really in love with is that groovy pool picture, with all its layers of swirly water. The Main St. scene is lovely, too. That shade of aqua, in various tone densities, is really lovely across the whole brochure. It's just as effective in the images without water. But that "bald caps and heavy makeup" look is still my fetish, apparently.

At first glance I thought the girl in the middle was shaved bald.
