Topper Takes a Trip

Select art illustrations from the 1945 Pocketbook edition of Thorne Smith's hilariously cute, supernatural romance spooker, Topper Takes a Trip (originally published in 1932.) Lovely and loose style, almost like doodle rough sketches, meanwhile the cover painting appears to be signed, but I'll be damned if I can make it out. If you're a fan of the Topper adventures, this is also one of the better entries in the fun film series as well, as our goofball ghost attempts to reunite a couple that she inadvertently had a hand in splitting up! Starring cutie pie Constance Bennett, Roland Young, and Billie Burke. You can watch it FREE on youtube HERE!

  1. That's really risqué for 1945! I suspect we didn't see Constance Bennett's bare ass in the film!

  2. I really love the sketchy inside art. I've seen a colored version of your sixth scan (the close up) used as a cover in more recent paperback volumes. I think it looks really modern and swank.

As for the awesome cover, it's by Baryé Phillips. Or at least the signature is. I mean, Phillips did all sorts of pulp and crime covers at the same time, but I've never seen anything like this before. Nothing that skews humorous or cartoony at all. And yet, if you check out his other work, the sig is is the same.

Thank you again for identifying the signature, Mr C! Very much appreciated!

  4. Like Brian said - i bet there's no naked ladies in the movie! And speaking of that - where's the naked men???? I guess I'll just have to turn to GoT or some other HBO show to dole out the skinless wieners via celluloid
