The Burning Book / They Called Her a Witch

With Walpurgisnacht, aka "The Night of Witches" just a few days away, we're celebrating our (almost) Halfway to Halloween calendar status over at THOIA by looking at tales of 100% weirrrrd witchcraft! And so now today here at AEET it's a double Charlton fright feature as well, with two creepy classics from two very different eras of Charlton comics, highlighted by two very different types of witches! Our first is from the May 1969 issue of Strange Suspense Stories #7, followed by one from the November 1959 issue of Strange Suspense Stories #44! And as mentioned, don't forget to tomb in over at THE HORRORS OF IT ALL for non-stop horror comics all year long!

  1. The first story had a Giallo feel to it, unreality for want of a better term.
Page 6 bottom right panel, "No...this ones taken! Lets look in the next suite" Let sleeping skeletons lie, or don't wake ol' lazybones.

The second tale was a good witch type tale, maybe she is related to Wendy the good little witch.

I always liked the Charlton tales, Grade B horror, but fun B horror.

  2. So the first tell is basically a cheap carnival dark ride of a story. Lots of doors to bang through, but we can always do with a sexy witch, and bats. Lots of bats. Bats everywhere!

Second is a nice turn around from the usual witches! Though, you have to wonder -- is she responsible for the building collapse? They did deserve it for being jerks to her ... but you have to wonder.

  3. Genius: I mean, if I found a book that disgorged its evil characters when it burned, I'm not sure I'd immediately hop to the conclusion that throwing it into the fire would save the day. But that's how it all turned out! Fight fire with fire!

I dig Miss Martek's high-crowned snap fedora. It's just a little bit taller than Indiana Jones', and very dashing. I don't know why anyone would want to move to that jerk town, though. Honey, let's buy that cute little house and move in! There's only one person in the whole city we like!
