Where It's At '75 (PART ONE)

We haven't time traveled in a while, and 1975 sounds like a trip cuz we've got nightlifing on our minds! Now as much as we like to boogie, we also like to eat, drink, shop, and lay around in the sun-- some of us even like to wear our collars extra humungous, and this awesome guide about "Where it's At" in mid 70's Virginia Beach is exploding with ace options! Soooo, after a skin bronzing day at the beach, and since we're already this close to the shore, it's gotta be turf AND surf; seafood at Captain Kidd's might be the place to start (but blow me down-- I can't believe they used the classic "DRAW ME" pirate image in their restaurant ad-- of course maybe that just means the owners are comic book fans? rad.) Afterwards, a short, relaxing stroll around Old Town Village before getting down at Pascal's under the brain shaking intensity of their quadrasonic sound system... wait a sec, the ad says "intimate, luxurious atmosphere." Hmph! I guess we're bookin' over to the Peppermint Beach Club instead! And far-out, man, we still have PART TWO of our trip coming up next! Can you dig it?!

  1. Reminds me of the corny beach town vacation destination from the film "Ping Pong Summer"... set in the 80s, but similar.

  2. The drawing of Captain Kidd was one of those “draw me and win an art scholarship”, Looks like someone did just that and won the chance to create advertisement art for a restaurant.

The picture of Bogart is interesting, a mix of 70's style pop artwork giving its rendition of the icon that is Bogart. It is the type of thing you would see a well known artist from the seventies create, a bit like a watered down Peter Max creation with subdued colors.

  3. I mentioned the pirate in my intro JMR...

Bill, I'll have to check out that movie! Thanks for the comments :)

  4. A restaurant called "Hansel and Gretel"? I think I would have skipped that one in 75. Too Dangerous for an 8 YO kid.

  5. But JD-- what if the entire Hansel and Gretel building is made of candy??!!

I almost meant to mention, don't miss the cute lil white whale on the Whalehead Beach ad, he's teeny and really neato!

  6. Oh my god I seriously love the Pascals ad! With the arty lone out of focus drink in the foreground! That is so fab!

And of course I love the dancing couple in the Peabodys ad. But all the ads are great! Esp the ones with pics of food in them :)

  7. I wonder if the dude in the Little Sicily ad is still working there and still throwing dough into the air-- he's awesome!

  8. I also would have accepted Tippy the Turtle or Cubby the Bear on the Captain Kidd sign.

  9. Indeed! Turtles and bears! The sure fire ticket to quality seafood!

  10. Jeesus Christmas, you'd think there was nothing but white people in Virginia Beach. In actuality it's full of off-duty Marines down from Quantico. I'm kind of glad that we are skipping Pascals, frankly. What is that, the world's most morose comedy show? I really love that Golden Dragon logo. I'll bet there are shit tons of marines with that tattoo.

  11. If you can't score at The Raven bar then your chances at love are-- never more!

  12. I think if I ate that Captain Kidd plate and then regurgitated it into a bucket, and poured it back onto the headache inducing table cloth, it wouldn't look any different than it does now.

One interesting thing about the Peppermint beach club (other than how obviously whitey it is) is how almost every woman has Farrah Facwett style hair!

  13. Pardon my error for mentioning the pirate pic, I was too busy looking through all of the pictures to read your post at the beginning.

  14. Holy smokes! I want a few bottles of Native Tan. Tan your Aztec, baby!

  15. Native Tan is the stuff I remember my mom using in the 70's... I even have a picture of her around here somewhere actually wearing a Native Tan t-shirt
