Jellystone Park '77

We're on summer vacation and traveling around the country this month here at AEET, seeing the sights while hitting up some roadside tourist traps along the way. And what better place to grab some additional sun 'n fun (and shut-eye) than at one of the many Yogi Bear Jellystone Park Camp Resorts. I actually only live about 15 minutes away from one of their locations so it's not really that much of a getaway for me-- but it still makes for a totally cool brochure, especially when it's filled with Hanna Barbera illustrations and colorful 70's photos. (PS: I'll take that guy in the nappy Yogi suit below over the recent live action CGI travesty version anyday!)

  1. The place looks like a blast to me!

Although, the copy writer seems to think he's writing for a Tony the Tiger camp ground. They're G-R-R-Reat!

  2. Cool! I stayed at the Jellystone Park in Orlando the one and only time I went to Disney World. Oddly enough, that would probably have actually been the summer of seventy-seven. All I remember is the groovy wooden billboard and a couple of cement cartoon characters that were too hot to touch.

Man, American vacations were different back then. I can't imagine driving fifteen hours with two six-year-olds, finally getting to the big city and then choosing to erect tents in a theme campground on the outskirts of town instead of collapsing at a hotel with a bar.

Also, thanks to this map, I see that I could have enjoyed this whole Florida experience (sans Disney and Cape Canaveral, sadly), virtually in my own back yard. Danville Virginia is only about a half-hour drive from where I grew up.

  4. Woah! It's cool you live right near a Jellystone!
I stayed at one about ten or so years ago, I think it was the Indian River location [Michigan]. Yogi rode on a golf cart everyday around the park and my brother & I thought it would be funny to put a log on the road.
I played on a Ninja Turtle arcade game for hours, but that's about all I can remember. Oh and the gift shop was fun!

  5. What's wild Colleen, is that the one by my house isn't even listed on the map in this brochure from '77, though I'm sure it's been around that long! It's right next door to the Six Flags in Eureka, MO and at xmas time they also do a really cool and totally overblown drive-thru light show with Hanna Barbera characters plus all kinds of pop culture icons coming to life. Thanks for stopping by and leaving a comment! To anyone else reading this, visit Colleen's amazing SPACE AGE SQUIRREL blog here:
