My neighbor was telling me a story yesterday about how he was grillin' steaks last weekend and one of his giant dogs knocked over the BBQ grill! He had stepped away for just a second to grab something from inside the house and returned to find not only his grill upturned and the glowing charcoal and food spilled everywhere, (not to mention a small section of his yard on fire!), but his beloved pooch running off with a half cooked hunk of meat in his jaws! It reminded me of this silly old Harvey story I remember reading recently about meat maddened mutts running amok, --so now you get to read it too! From the April 1952 issue of Humphrey Comics #22.
Stray dogs and butcher meat--What teen couldn't identify with that?

ReplyDeleteI love the giant, open pile of meat on the counter. All the bacteria he's going to get from eating that will make him thin in no time!
ReplyDeleteThis is excellent work. Should I assume Ham Fisher drew it? His signature is pretty promenant on the cover, but the Grand Comics Database has all the content credited with question marks. Somebody somewhere must think the cover signature is some kind of a front.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, sorta gives away the joke in the splash, but I have to forgive it because I love any story with creepy black and grey meat.
Not sure if Hammond illustrated the story art, (which to me sort of looks more like Lee Elias trying his hand at something more cartoony), but Fisher likely illustrated the cover art... I guess?
