The Most Beautiful Girl in the World

Friday Frights time again, and here's a great lookin', sinsational stunner from the October 1978 Charlton Comics Group issue of Haunted #38, with art by the ever underrated, Jorge Galvez. Also FYI, with the recent revival of The Horrors of it All blog, I might limit the frightful delightfuls around AEET just to maintain a more horrorly packed archive over there, but always fear, --we will absolutely still see a few chillers on this site every month as well! I guess, if anyone has a solid opinion on this matter, please make it be known in the comments. Thank you! --K

  1. I think the most Charlton I've read is on your various blogs, but I don't remember them being that risque, especially for 78! I'm not complaining, and frankly, I'd like to see more of these titles. No, not for that reason, but I haven't seen a lot of them. Well, ok, partly for that reason!

The story is pretty predictable, it's nearly impossible to do a devil story and have it be otherwise, but the good girl art is crazy in this thing, almost every page! Even some interesting panels, like 2 panel on page 4, where most of the line work was removed. It's a great art job.

I will say, though, I had a hard time reading it. The no borders and caption placements sometimes got me mixed up.

No real horse in the race for where horror stories go, I read both blogs. If I was forced to choose, I say keep them at THOIA.

  2. I see after issue #34 (Feb 1978), this series was not submitted to the Comics Code Authority, which would explain the copious amount of skin on display here. Straight from 7-11 to under the mattress.

  3. Great panel with the person going through the window with their flares
    billowing. Gotta love the 70's!

  4. Ha ha, even the cover of this issue is cheesecake.

I feel like the devil pulled a fast one here. Like, she doesn't seem to actually be getting the deal she signed up for. The one she's paying for. And assuming this thing's written in Satan-person perspective, then the introductory narration is kind of wall-to-wall lies, too. Jerk devil.

As far as organization goes, I'm probably a bad person to ask. I get kind of OCD when it comes to things like this, and I would definitely for certain make sure THOIA held the complete horror database (at least all the precode stuff). Meaning that, if these were my two blogs, I'd be backdating and cross-posting all the horror from over here back over there, too (and doing the all tags, etc.). It would surely take me forever; I'd stay up all night all week long. I've done this kind of lunacy before.

I'm not suggesting you do that. I'll read it all no matter where it is. Follow your star.

  5. This tale could have been a Night Gallery episode, though I'm not sure the TV censors would allow too much skin to be seen, even during the liberated 70's.

A little horror on 'And Everything Else Too' is fine by me. Variety is the spice of life, and a little horror now and then on this blog keeps things spiced up nicely.
