Some of you saw this on FB the other day, but here it is again-- and yes, after years of looking, it's true-- I finally found a late 50’s Mother Stover’s mini dime-store toy set. These always have the greatest header card art, (check google for tons of other incredible examples), and is it just me, or does this one seem extra packed with funny little teeny weeny accessories: a top hat, a check book, a pair of old shoes, two bottles of booze, lots of greenbacks, and a father of the bride shotgun, haha… HELP! My dream is to one day find some of the monster / horror themed sets. Anyone out there have any to sell or trade, please drop me a line!
Okay, weird. Day before yesterday (or whenever) when I looked these up I was able to find nothing. Well, I could find a number of "doll house accessory" sets and the like--pretty close--but only with blister cards showing Grandmother Stover herself on the artwork. Just now, when I was gearing up to ask you here in the comment just where I have to go to find these "tons" of other examples, I tried again. And, lo and behold, I did indeed find a ton of them. I can't fathom what has changed since Tuesday (or whenever).
ReplyDeleteThere are so many great horror themed ones. Graveyard Gertie is most excellent, and Little Monster, too. And I see the THOIA link down there on your own sidebar is taken form one of these packages, maybe the best of the lot (well, it has a tombstone for one thing). Super!
The one you actually found and bought is great too, of course. I've never seen these before anywhere, but I'll start keeping my eye for them. Being from Columbus, Ohio, there's a chance the cool old stuff was mostly marketed in the mid-west. Might make them pretty scarce in the southeast.

ReplyDeleteYes sir, you win the THOIA / AEET no prize for figuring that one out! haha
I can't even imagine walking into a dime store back in the day and seeing these things hanging there on spindle rack, let alone trying to decide which one/s to get-- I'm sure my head would've exploded.
And after you are done with the wedding, you can use these as pieces in your monopoly set!
ReplyDeleteOhio? I automatically reckoned it would be out of Florida! This is how we learn...
