Ms. Vampire Killer / Smartest Plant in the World

So what's everyone hungry for today? I mean, Thanksgiving 2020 seems a bit tainted thanks to the pandemic, and with the CDC recommending everyone just stay home and far away from friends and family for fear of spreading additional infection and even death, well, need I say that this holiday season is indeed one big horror show. So in keeping with that theme --as well as the theme of hungry things in need of feeding-- today I have a two course platter of petrifying 70's DC doom, both from the horrifically cool House of Secrets series, issues #121 and #154 to be exact. "Feed me!" you scream?  Open wide, and everyone please have a safe and happy horrorday...

  1. I really dig Lady Vampire Slayer's unmistakably '70s get-up, but watching Professor Rabin feeding live animals to Anita... I was really -- ahem -- 'root'ing for the plant to chomp him good at some point.

I always wanted a Venus flytrap named Cleopatra, but wouldn't want one THIS big. In the meantime, I've settled for a begonia instead. I DID name her Cleopatra though! (I might be a Munsters gal, but I still love the Addams Family too!)

  2. That's a gorgeous piece of art of by Cruz. I do like how both vampires (oops, spoilers) aren't drawn as anything other than humans with extra long teeth, which grounds the story a bit more.

The splash is great, there's a composition line with the victim that crosses the entire panel. The vampire fight is action packed and flows well. While I've never been the biggest fan of the writing in DCs post code stuff but the art has always made up for it. This is just a brilliant job, on every panel.

Now the plant story caught me with the ending, so that's good, and I love the art here, also. A ton of love on the plants and leaves, and some great facial expressions on the last page.

I'm more drawn to the art on the first story, but both these are excellent.

    Happy T-Day!

  3. Man, the Carpathians sure are going to be surprised when they roll out of bed tomorrow, only to discover the Alps have made off with one third of Romania. Oh come on, I haven't gotten to be the one who makes the pedantic comment in so long....

What a great Thanksgiving anthology! Now I'm hungry. Being a pescatarian, I've never much loved the traditional holiday fare--turkey and stuffing are out, gravy a no-go; hell, even the biscuits have lard. I never really liked yams or pumpkin pie, either. But I could really tuck into a carnivorous salad right about now. Off to the kitchen.

  4. Haha, great comments-- thanks everyone. And before you think that my blog is turning into DC horror central with the comic posts, please remember that a lot of these were planned to be posted between TWO blogs back in October, before the stupid blogger update threw a monkey wrench into those plans. So please be patient, other publishers (golden and silver) will be coming soon too-- stay tombed!

  5. Wonder whether the "Romanians" understood that baseball reference. I didn't, only that it has something to do with baseball.

How do you keep a stake in a purse? Is it "rip from the inside by a sharp pointed piece of wood"-proof?

  6. It's a good thing the villagers couldn't read Prof. Zarko's dialogue, only hear it, because her claim of "batting .1000" isn't all that impressive.
