My fondness for Mountain Dew soft drink and related vintage hillbilly product character mascots for all of the similarly themed knock-off drinks goes way back, and a few more additions to that soda sector of my collection now contains a Hill Billy Brew / Lil Brown Jug double-sided bottle, as well as an unused Kickapoo Joy Juice bottle carton, both from the 60's, and both in great condition. They actually still make Kickapoo soda, but unfortunately, the Lil Abner characters are no longer associated with it.

I've picked up Kickapoo Joy Juice over the years from a local grocer that carries specialty sodas and I like it.
ReplyDeleteI'm always a little amazed that, through some kind of luck or foresight, things like that six-pack carton still exist. I mean they just made bottles better back then, thicker, with painted-on labels that wouldn't fade away--and I remember finding plenty of old ones in the woods when I was a kid. "It'll Tickle Yore Innards" Dew bottles and "2, 4, 10" Dr. Peppers. But sixty-year-old paper packaging can't survive without preservation. Someone liked that enough to keep it pressed flat in cool dry air for almost six decades.
ReplyDeleteSometimes I wonder what weird junk I should have kept. What I have is a lot of large plastic Disney promotional cups from the time when I was worked in a theater. Roger Rabbit, Dick Tracy. What I wish I had was a whole sleeve of waxed paper Burger King cups from the eighties. I wish I'd taken more pictures at the mall. I wish I'd bought a bunch of arcade games back when they were selling them dirt cheap just to make warehouse space.
So I love soda, try out and buy new soda/pop/liquid sugar all the time, but even I don't think I'd drink something made in a rickety wooden tub by people with bare feet!
ReplyDeleteI'm sure Kickapoo's was immensely better than Flim-Flam's "Lotsa Luck" Joy Juice!
ReplyDeleteI’ll admit, this vendor actually had a big stack of the unused cartons, either they worked at the bottling plant or maybe they were just leftovers from the old Dogpatch USA theme park (I was in the general vicinity after all!)

Haha, love that episode :)
Thanks for the comments!
