If you noticed the Kenner Give-A-Show Projector (1961) listed in our xmas catalog scans of the previous post (HERE!) and were curious to know more about it, well then you've come back to the right place! The G.A.S.P., (as I shall call it), was a fun little 60's toy for kids, completely identical to the photo projection device that your mom and dad once used many moons ago to show off their own vacation slides to friends and family, --only this time it's cartoon comic slides on a strip that you feed horizontally through the projector, and featuring all of your animated TV favorites, right there on your wall, and larger than life! Unfortunately, I don't have the projector, but I do have a mislabeled box full of colorful slide kookiness, (wait, it's "ABBA" instead of "YABBA?!") and all of which apparently came from some of the other Kenner slide box sets. And so now, without further ado, here's all sides of the box lid art, as well as all seven frames from all six slides. Enjoy!
The Flintstones
StingRay
The 3 Stooges
Hokey Wolf
Yogi Bear
Superman
The slides even have neat little character art on them as well:
Look at that .44 cent sticker!!! There are versions of the Give-A-Show Projector that include Scooby... I absolutely NEED one someday.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised at the comical ending on the more action oriented StringRay strip.
ReplyDeleteI heard Hokey Wolf's speech mannerisms in my head when I read that one!
The Yogi Bear one is kind of clever!
This was great great great! I could almost imagine these being projected onto a wall or makeshift screen made from a bedsheet by the youngsters of decades ago.
ReplyDeleteYeah, I'll bet these looked great on the wall. They even photograph well. I love it. I thought the Flintstones and Stingray strips were the best (especially frames four, five, and six of the latter). It'd be a great way to red seventy-five years worth of Alley Oop daily strips.
ReplyDeleteThey should have sold packs of blanks so kids could draw color their own slides.
Hoping to dig up some of these slides in the future, and when I do I'll be sure to post about them as well! Thanks for the comments :)
ReplyDeletedig up MORE of these slides, I meant
ReplyDeleteMan, look how dejected Superman looks in that last panel. Guess he expected more than a simple quip.
ReplyDeleteI had the 1970's version of the Give-a-Show. Mine had Scooby Doo, Speed Buggy, Korg 70,000 BC, Land of the Lost, etc. All of the great Saturday morning shows of the mid 1970's.
I have a Mr T one at home ive searched to find others out there but no joy, has anybody else come across one
