Halfway to Halloween

We're officially halfway to Halloween 2020, and even though we're isolating ourselves in quarantine and practicing safe social distancing-- today is still your lucky day! That's right, we're having a masquerade ball here at AEET, and famous news photographer, Lucky Starr himself has invited you all along to share in the haunted house shenanigans, plus, plenty of bad guys, bad/good golden age artwork, hellacious costumes, and more! This is a very funny story from the August 1946 issue of Lucky Comics #5, with a sense of ball bustin' humor that could only come from a comic of this era. The art by Alan Mandel is fun, though a little uneven at times, but that Walter Johnson cover is hotter than Hell! And for more spooky good times, head over to THE HORRORS OF IT ALL where, of course, every day is Halloween!

Porky's Ghost Chasers

Just a few more days and we'll be halfway to Halloween in this *cough cough* cautionary calendar year of 2020, and what better way to celebrate than to hunt down some p-p-p-p-p-petrifying p-p-p-p-p-polterg-g-g-g-geists with our good pal Porky Pig in his Ghost Chasers mobile! This was an early 90's McDonald's Happy Meal toy, and I just adore how the little ghost can be tucked down inside and then bolt up with a BOO! when you push in the yellow grill on the front of the truck. I'll have a few more Halfway to Halloween posts coming up, but for now-- THAT'S ALL FOLKS!

Hess

More fun key art from the same March 1958 issue of Real For Men (see the previous two posts), all created by "Hess" and part of a chapter titled, "The Real Almanac" which acted as a monthly supplement of assorted, permanent, and ever useful information articles.

The Mighty Sportsmen

Fun key art for a late 50's " REAL" men's magazine article about sportsmen, highlighted by hunting, fishing, outdoor cooking, snowshoeing, and moose calling. I only do one of the things pictured (BBQing), so I'm not really sure if I'm actually qualified to even read this magazine...

KING KONG KRUSH(ed)

A couple of KING KONG funnies reprinted for the May 1974 issue of The Monster Times #33. Sacrifice originally appeared in The Monster Times #7 (art by Steve Hickman and story by Joe Simons), while the one panel gag originally appeared in the adult men's magazine, Cavalier.

R.I.P. Mort Drucker - Rosemia's Boo-Boo

We sadly lost another comic book legend yesterday, and today, AEET pays tribute to the heroic hand and masterfully MAD mind of Mort Drucker, who passed away at the age of 91. It's hard to put into words how much this mans art meant to me from my earliest years as a young MAD magazine reader, and today we present a fine example of his craft, from the January 1969 issue of MAD #124.

Giant Robot vs. GR 2

Time once again for more giant robo action here at AEET, and who's the coolest giant retro robot --next to Gigantor, Mecha-Godzilla, and the Shogun Warriors? That's right, Johnny Sokko's GIANT ROBOT! I picked these up in Japan a few years ago, they're around 4 to 4 1/2 inches tall and are from a Furuta gashapon set of popular Mitsuteru Yokoyama characters, including GR's evil brother, GR2 (aka Torozon.) Lots of great detail, and fun to assemble too!

The Horror of it All?

NEWS: I've received quite a few private messages through Facebook and Instagram congratulating me on my new podcast with Fangoria. I have to say, it is indeed an honor to see my other blog (now in its 13th year) associated with a magazine that I've loved and collected since I was 11 years old. I mean, I can actually remember seeing Fangoria #1 right there on the newsstand in '79! Yes, over the years I've learned a lot about the horror films I've cherished most, and one other huge medal of honor that I will forever wear proudly on my jacket came the day my comic book series, HAUNTED HORROR, actually received a rockin' review courtesy of Fango editor, Svetlana FedotovFangoria is certainly an important magazine to the genre that we horror fiends all dig the best-- there is just one small problem though....

I have absolutely nothing to do with this podcast.

Anyway, best of luck to them. I do hope my blog name helps with their hits, just as I hope random google searches for their podcast brings new visitors over to THOIA, and possibly even here to AEET.

And that's about all I'm ever going to say about any of this... seriously.

Joust Boingler

Once again, working on a larger post, but wanted to share something with you: 35+ years after beating the arcade machine version at Showbiz Pizza Place, I’ve finally received the coveted Joust Boingler Award! Okay, actually this is part of the Midway Gaming Box which also includes a Rampage journal, Defender Teeny Tin, Joust and Gauntlet bumper stickers, Paper Boy sheet magnet, and a Spy Hunter Pin! A very cool gift set for the retro arcade fan like myself!
