Jimmy's and Mary's

I found a really fun old matchbook today for a KC steakhouse called Jimmy's and Mary's-- specializing in "steaks fit for a king" plus pizza pie and other really fine foods and cocktails. Deliciously steamy illustrated food decorate both sides of the full color matchbook, but when you open it up to get to the matches (unused), well, that's when things really get hot! I've seen matches shaped like stripper legs and booze bottles, and now I have myself 21 teeny tiny chefs with exploding chef hats ready to set fire to my world of collectibles too! Phone VA.9397 for more info!

  1. Great find. I had heard some chefs are hotheads but this is ridiculous.

  3. Sweet. I don't think I've ever seen the match heads be so integral to the kitsch design. These are very specialized blobs of potassium chlorate and sulfur!

  4. Do you remember their number as VAlley-9397 or VAndyke-9397 (see https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Telephone_exchange_names )?

I can't quite make out what's now at https://www.google.com/maps/place/3400+Main+St,+Kansas+City,+MO+64111/@39.065409,-94.5858474,20z/data=!4m2!3m1!1s0x87c0f0208eaf2a13:0x69b3ad8354b8ec4a (Davey's Uptown Ramblers is next door at 3402).

  5. Thanks for this post on Jimmy & Mary's Steakhouse. Love the matches! I'm Nick Vedros with thelumineonmuseum.org and we rescued the PARK IN REAR sign from the building. It was donated by Davey's owner Michele. If you know the year Jimmy & Mary's opened please e-mail me with that. info@thelumineonmuseum.org.
My intention is to restore the sign to light up again and would love more history and evenutally put it in a Kansas City neon museum for our community. We now have 47 signs.
    Thanks

    Nick

  10. Looking up information on Jim and Mary's and ran across this post. My father ran the 39th Club Bar back around 1960. I heard stories how he would take the entire staff at like 2 in the morning to eat there. I ate there later in the 80's with him and it was very nostalgic for him. What great memories.
