This classic cover illustration from the June 1925 issue of Hi-Jinks Volume 1 #1 has been making the tumblr rounds lately, and every time I see it I think it's a really cute, interesting image-- but why oh why those damn duck sized lips and nasty nostrils?! So, with a little bit of photoshoppery, (and the addition of a boob that seems strangely absent from the open top original), I went to work:
BEFORE
AFTER
I'm not saying I totally improved it, (although bare breasts do have a habit of achieving a certain something extra special whenever possible), but maybe, just maybe, I've helped her look a little more cute 'n pixie-ish whilst flying around on that crazy wasp-butterfly-- and a lot less like a snotty, drunken barfly who can't find her way out of the tavern bathroom at 3am. Hey, maybe that's what the artist originally was going for in the first place-- who knows?

A neat update to the cover, Karswell.
ReplyDeleteThe contents of Hi-Jinks is a time capsule of what was considered funny back then, though a few comments by Hi-Jinks' writers certainly come across as supporters of the Jim Crow mentality back then.
Learn from the past to avoid mistakes in the present and future, especially the narrow mindedness of past thinking.
Of course, this is no knock against you, Karswell, you find great stuff all the time and we are all grateful for it. Readers of this blog will know full well what you post to entertain, no other agenda. Its just those who have no sense of humor or are thin skinned (or is 'triggered' the new word for it?) who might have a problem with some of the stories in Hi-Jinks. They fail to realize what was OK nearly a century ago is politically incorrect today, and if we don't learn from the past we are doomed to repeat it (at least that is what my History teacher used to tell us kids back then).
Sorry for the long post but I just wanted to nip any snide comments in the bud before they get posted.
As always, thanks for all you do Karswell.
Great work! This is a really neat image, and I, for one, hadn't ever seen it before. I love strange bugs.
ReplyDeleteYay for the boob! But why didn't the butterfly dude get a wiener?
