Don't Overdo With Video Games! (PART TWO)

Time was blown. Hard earned money was pissed away. You smell reeeeeally bad. Valued friends were squandered, and now the parents are looking into military schools! Video games have consumed and destroyed every single part of your no longer blossoming life!!! But wait-- before we 911 a higher power, there's a remote chance that someone can help! Yes, it's time for the educational second half of Don't Overdo (it) With Video Games, one of many "Survival Series for Kids" books from the early 80's (see previous post for more info by clicking HERE!) Let's see if Chris can get his goddamn shit together or not, shall we? And thank you for playing! :)

Yay, Chris!!! You did it! You overcame the unhealthy urges and obsessive / compulsive behavior  so commonly associated with the video gaming habit, and now when you go to the arcade you understand the true meaning and value of uhhhh... uh oh...

Well, back to the 'ol drawing board...

Don't Overdo With Video Games! (PART ONE)

I vaguely remember the "Survival Series For Kids" books from my pre to early teen years. There were at least 2 dozen or more separate collections on topics such as hanging around with the wrong crowd, earning your allowance, making your own meals (don't slurp your soup!), and OMG-- please do something else besides watch TV... etc! I guess the one entry that struck home the loudest for me (besides standing up straight!) was Don't Overdo (it) With Video Games!

Reading it again 30+ years later, it makes a lot more sense than it probably did when I was a know-it-all early 80's teenager, and as with most things presented here at AEET, the stuff we tend to focus on more than any of the moral rights and wrongs, priorities and / or habits / addictions, is the wonderful artwork-- and QUIRK-A QUIRK-A TWEETZ BREEEP! --this book illustrated by Bartholomew is simply packed full of it! Ultra loose, incredibly energetic, Paul Coker Jr.  / Jared Lee inspired, arcadian fun and awesomeness awaits you on practically every other page!

So come with us now as our GORP obsessed lil buddy, Chris, plumbs the vilest depths of video gaming sin: isolating himself from his friends, lying to his dad, stealing money from his mom's purse, and overall just taking hilariously bad advice from a presumably invisible Pac Man ghost! Can he be saved? Will his high score be beaten?!! Will he ditch church and instead head to the arcade! You'll have to come back for PART TWO in our next post for the answers-- but for now, plunk in a quarter and focus, you might learn a thing or two!

Sugar Babies '79: The Burlesque Musical

Another recent antique mall find was this 20 page program from the 1979 Broadway smash hit, Sugar Babies, starring Mickey Rooney and Ann Miller. It's full of fun black and white photos from the show (gorgeous chorus girl overload!), but nothing beats those colorfully cute, leggy little sugar babies on the cover, illustrated by the great Hilary Knight; an artist probably best known for his wonderful visuals behind the 50's Eloise kid's book series, as well as countless other memorable magazines, album covers, and advertising.

A Pop Hit Card

I recently found A Pop Hit Card from the 50's for $1 at an antique mall. It's a postcard 45 record (look close and you can see the grooves) that plays FEVER by Peggy Lee on one side, just like those cool cereal box singles from the 70's. Fun artwork and funny message from the sender on the back, it was originally mailed to someone in DeSoto, MO in 1959.

Lemmy Num Nums

If Keebler's going to have a fudge stripe cookie called Lemmy Num Nums, then might I suggest a slight redesign of the elf on the package?
(FYI: Lemmy Num Nums rock)
