Dairy Queen Party Book (1960)

I gave you a lil halloween taste in our last post of a page from the Dairy Queen Party Book published in 1960, a superbly illustrated booklet likely handed out free at DQ stands back in the day. Today I have the entire booklet for you-- yep, all the holiday party and special occasion game idea fun you could ever possibly handle for young and old alike! Man, I don't know about you, but some of the names of these games could be detail / rule modified a wee bit to also liven up a naughty "adult" party as well: Swat the Mosquito, Make an Irish Castle, Beanbags for Favors, Paint the Flag, Now You See It, Shave You're Next!, Heel and Toe Race, Package Delivery, 4-Letter Word, etc... and for god's sake don't forget the luscious DQ ice cream with all the toppings!

  1. these party game books are seriously just too much! i freaking love how bizarre they are!

and it almost seems as if someone made up most of these games without anyone ever actually attempting them in real life. like the Donut Derby on the Thanksgiving page. seriously who would want to take a bite out of a donut with a bunch of string in their mouth. and then get to keep the donut that someone else also took a bite out of. what a prize!!!

and those kids doing the Paint the Flag Contest are entirely too happy to be playing that game.

i love the record themed teen party page - of course! but man - that Shave? You're Next game would be a lot more fun with whipped cream. and i like you're idea of changing these games to "adult" themed. i think im gonna make my own adult themed Dairy Queen Party Book!!!

but i'm sure freaking glad i wasn't going to parties in 1960 though. i sure as hell wouldn't have wanted to go to a girls party where i sewed patches and did dishes. :(

i freaking love all of this though. the super cute illustrations and the funny phrases like "a tight lipped couple" and "girls scramble aboard and their mounts run."

and i'd really like to see that A Test for Bifocals game on the Grownups Jamboree page in action! i think you need to demonstrate that for us and post a pic!

    1. If you make your own adult themed party games booklet and share it online, I will most certainly perform a Test for Bifocals!

  2. I know it makes thematic sense, but there is still something a little strange about the idea of going to a party that relies so much on potatoes. My goal would be to lose that peeling game just as fast as I possibly could.

We used to play that "breath taking test" game at bars all the time, though we did it with playing cards and without straws. Talk about a get-to-know-me activity. We called it "suck and blow."

Several of the forfeits really cracked me up, and I think that's the best fodder for a real adult party. Especially one at my house, where alcohol will be served. I sure hope I'm not the one who has to make up a cowboy song, though. Imitating animals is more my speed.

I think my favorite page (besides yesterday's Halloween stuff, of course), is the Dairy Queen ad at the end. Man, I love that look: brush art over precise technical line drawings.

    1. I should have photoshopped the front and back cover together at the end of the post-- the giant ice cream cone in each image spreads over both covers

  3. I'm holding you to that!

  4. For the Hawaiian luau party, which instrumental music would be most appropriate, Tiny Bubbles or the Hawaii 5-0 theme music?

  5. Terrific scans.
Half of me wishes people still had parties like this and didn't think they were stupid -- and the other half of me is glad that they don't.

JMR777: The "Tiki Culture" crowd likes the Hawaiian-themed Reader's Digest LP boxed-set (now on CD, but they play LPs on a hi-fi), and any 1950s-1960s Hawaiian budget LP (which usually recycle the same tracks with a different artist name, album title, and cover photo).

  6. I enjoy watching the hula girls shake their stuff to thrash metal personally
