Weather-Predicting Poodle vs. TV Heebie-Jeebies

While we're on a mail order catalog kick, here are more select highlights for you from another recently acquired Sunset House booklet from 1965 (use the AEET search engine for more Sunset House awesomeness in the archive!) There was seriously no limit to the bright ideas and unusual new inventions specifically designed with your happiness in mind, so sayeth the fine folks at Sunset House. Also, there might be a few repeats here from the other posts, but on the good side, this one seems heavy on the sexy lady undergarment items-- who's complaining?!

  1. ok - i'm WAY geeked about those nudie ice cubes. and the bubble ice cubes. i guess i've just come to the realization that i have a thing for novelty ice cubes.

we used to have a couple of those Stretch-A-Way style rubber band exercise things hanging on door handles around the house when i was a kid and i tried them out back then - but got bored real quick.

i really love these old ads!

  2. I'm all about that see thru window mirror-- I want those on every window in my house. And my car.

  3. ha! yeah i've never been a fan of doors with windows where the jig is up that you're home when you go to look and see who it is. i'd be into the window mirror - but also a locked gate with a surveillance/intercom camera - which Sunset House does not seem to offer.

  4. Well you could use the mirror to pencil in your pattern eyebrows while listening to the worlds tiniest radio too, ya know!

  5. i would be listening to the worlds tiniest radio all the time anyway. it totally reminds me of the 6 mil dollar man backpack radio - only it's even smaller!

i really like the pic of the eyebrow pattern, but in reality it's just so silly. i can't condone the purchase of something that extraneous. not when you could be purchasing the Weather Predicting Poodle or the Bunion Bandage. and if you got that helping hand zipper puller you could hold hands with it too - cause it's shaped like a little hand! and the ad says it's handier than a husband so you wouldn't be needing one of those anymore.

  6. Yeah, notice how nobody uses men anymore? The zipper puller phased 'em out back in '65-66. A serioisly pointless addition to existence. Plus you can use the zipper puller to whip those newspaper logs right into the fireplace "lasso style" from across the room without even getting up.

  7. the rubber jar opener had a hand in that phase-out operation too. then came the handy reaching grabber thing and it was all over.

i think men can come in handy to kill the big spiders every now and again though. they're not totally pointless :)

  8. I had the "see and draw." As you can expect, it didn't work very well, and it especially didn't get any women in bikinis to come by and sit for a drawing.

  9. Weird, I couldn't control the flood of bikini (and nude) babes with my See & Draw... you must not have been trying hard enough, Brian!

  10. I think the zipper puller thing is kinda genius. I can't believe that didn't catch on (or at least I've never seen one before). I mean, high dollar, jewel-studded silver chain versions would look spectacular as accessories, and then be handy at home too.

I think some of those overnight "beauty secrets" look a lot like the kind of stuff they used to slap on cadavers to keep them from sagging before the funeral.

Mostly though, I love the juxtaposition between the dream suit girl and the roaches. That's just fantastic. One slow fade and Kafka time.

  11. those zipper pull things were around a lot back then, mr. c. my mom and grandma both had multiple zipper pulls with different degrees of fanciness. one i remember was beaded - the whole length of the puller was made of woven strung pearl beads and had a hook on the end for the zipper. i've never seen one with a little hand before though.

i Do have a vintage back scratcher that has a little hand on the end though! i love that thing.

  13. Make logs from newspapers!
I wonder if anyone ever did that?

  14. i think a lot of people do it or have done it. i've seen a lot of those types of log making things in backwoods home mags and survivalist type mags and books. it's not a bad idea if you have a bunch of newspapers lying around.

  15. I've used newspaper to start a fire, but it was usually in more of a crumpled state-- not a meticulous, tight log roll.
