The purpose of the Crayola Crayon Project Book (1958 / Binny & Smith) was to "help youngsters have more fun with crayons", because (as the intro goes on to say), "Crayons are more than a plaything; they are an aid to learning." I couldn't agree more, and this booklet is full of great ideas and lovely 50's artwork showing you just how to do it.
Heck yeah. Why didn't I ever think of decorating Easter eggs with crayons? That makes so much more sense than that smelly vinegar dye from Paas (another highly nostalgic box with frequently excellent artwork).
ReplyDeleteMy favorite moment in this little book of great stuff comes on page three in the description for the Tidy Bags. Did you notice this? It says "Have children decorate large paper bags..." --this is the only clue we get in the whole book that it is being targeted at the adults. The rest of the suggestions just cut to the chase, skipping the kids completely: "Draw these paper plates, Karswell. Make these robot helmets, Karswell."
I challenge you to a duel, Mr C! Just as soon as we make some Crayon battle armor and helmets! The crayon is mightier than the sword!
ReplyDeleteYou just wait. In Late fall 2013, when I finish unpacking in the next place, I'll have enough cardboard boxes to sic a damn army of darkness all over Misery. You and your little helper are toast.
ReplyDeleteBy then I'll have Giant Crayon Cardboard Battle Bots constructed. You're dead.
ReplyDeleteThese illustrations are so great! And I really love the red and black color scheme. I could stare at these all day.
ReplyDeleteYou're on my team to fight and destroy Mr C, right Carol?
ReplyDeleteCan I be the referee?
ReplyDeletePersonal cheer leader?
