As promised, more from my 1950's magazine collection featuring rare photo articles of Maila "Vampira" Nurmi at her loveliest, and apparently-- at her most deadly!! ie: see the first sad story from Whisper Magazine that weaves a ridiculous bit of nonsense out of James Dean's tragic death with Vampira and black magic. (This is the article that Maila says got her blacklisted in Hollywood.) Plus, a few other fun articles from Brief, Picture Week, People Today, etc. "Unpleasant dreams, darlings..."
that kid in the striped shirt and suspenders is one lucky li'l bastard...
ReplyDeleteThat article was fascinating! I wonder if any of it is actually tru though. Either way, a great read!
ReplyDeletePreposterous madness. What troubled young man doesn't seek out extreme women and then become disillusioned when they turn out to be regular folks? What black magic? Dean comes off like a mopey scenester prick, at best absorbed by his own arch poetical curlicues and at worst actively manipulative and suicidal. What a bore.
ReplyDeleteOn the other hand, I will now forever be referring to my snapshots of friends and family as my "altar".
>that kid in the striped shirt and suspenders is one lucky li'l bastard...
ReplyDeleteNot to brag but while I was helping Maila out for a few years back in the late 90's, I got a couples kisses on the cheek from her and lots of hugs too. Great gal, I miss her tons.
>I wonder if any of it is actually tru though.
Well, Dean died. That part was true. And even though ABC had already cancelled The Vampira Show at this point, Maila's career pretty much went kapoot after this mag came out. She told me the story many many times. It still hurt her so much in fact it brought tears to her eyes 40+ years later.
>Preposterous madness.
Of course it all is, same thing in 2011 with the endless overblown dramatics gossipy tabloid stunts involving today's so-called "stars" though. Nothing changes in Hollywood, people still get chewed up, spit out, and ruined in Tinsel Town same as ever. Some deserve it, but as we see here with Maila, some don't.
Thanks for the comments, and also to all the fine folks over at the Vampira facebook page that clicked the "like" button on these last two posts. Join her fb fanpage/group if you haven't already, tons of daily updates and rare photos etc... it's a cool place to meet fellow Vampira lovers like yourself.
Hmmmm, I'm still feeling the vampires, not sure what's going on (Halloween coming I guess), we might have a little more bloodsucker action coming up next too... so hang around (upside down!)
