In our previous BARMATE post we saw how Southern Comfort Corp used Playboy bunnies to help sell their product, now we see in the highlights from this earlier booklet from 1963 a handful of 100 proof, one-panel funnies from a half dozen or so gag artist greats like Hoff and Vip, as well as one of my all-time favorites, Eldon Dedini (who also illustrated the cover.)
Those are cute! And I always like finding fun drink recipes. For me, bartending was a bit like playing with a chemistry set. Although in Colorado, the main mixed drink that people tend to order is the Margarita. Occasionally I'd get orders for martinis, which are fun to make but when you get right down to it, it's a double shot of gin or vodka with a couple of drops of vermouth. I used to like to drink gin bloody marys and I like to make my bloody marys from scratch--no dang shortcut mix for this kid!
ReplyDeleteKarswell: Oh my God, what perfectly beautiful graphic design!
ReplyDeleteIndeed! Thanks for the comments you guys, got another fun 60's catalog of goofy fun coming up next!
ReplyDeleteIt seems strange to me that these booklets devote this much space to proving something so obvious as the fact that different liquors taste different. If the target novice bartender is so at sea that he's unable to fathom the differences between gin and bourbon without pouring himself a full-on taste test, I think he's probably also a lost cause as an immediate mixologist, too.
ReplyDeleteMartin and Martinez are tying REMMY GENTO LITTLE ZOO.
ReplyDeleteThought you'd want to know.
