...says an outboard enthusiast. "If you've never had experience with it, you won't believe anyone's description... and if you have, anything you might say is entirely inadequate." So begins the hilarious intro to this wildly fun, awesomely illustrated 30+ page guide published by the Outboard Boating Club of America in 1960. Covering the full A to Z spectrum of boating safety, from launching to fishing, to common sense and courtesy, today's choice selection of highlights from these pages get us back to the "safety theme" that I started last week (see car and home posts) before Scarlet O'Neil interrupted the program.
I enjoyed the pretty colors and whimsical illustrations with this one. It's unfortunate that I can't go boating unless I take an anti motion sickness pill because otherwise I quickly resemble the lady with the green face.
ReplyDeleteBoy, is this stuff the shot. Pure atomic age gold. That first page is so beautiful. Love the graphic design sense, those blocks of pastel color that are so symmetrically soothing. Also, love that last frank Lloyd Wright-like house on the last page.
ReplyDeleteGo OBC!
>otherwise I quickly resemble the lady with the green face.
ReplyDeleteWell Facey Strange, I have to say I am sad that your face isn't green all the time, you know, in a cool Star Trek maiden from outer space sort of way!
>Pure atomic age gold.
Indeed Mykal, and you would love the rest of this book too as the remainder of the art resembles more the style on the pages you mentioned. I only scanned the exaggerated, cartoony character pages as that's what I liked best about this booklet.
Thanks for the comments!
wish they had made a cartoon in the 60s with characters that looked like these guys, how fun!! the noses on those guys lol!!

ReplyDeleteYou mean like an animated series or something? Yeah, for sure... I guess the closest thing would be 60's Hannah Barbera or even the drive-in intermission animation shorts from the same era.
Hey Karswell!
ReplyDeleteAnother cool blog! I've been so preoccupied recently that I haven't been blog surfing much, or I would've been here sooner! I'm a HUUUGE fan of these 50's/60's style ad graphics, so I'm digging it, man!
I'll be back often to delve into your treasure trove of cool posts.
Thanks!
Thanks Apoco! Look around the archives, there's alot of things you would like in the vein of 50's/60's style ad graphics... thanks again!
