Aka: Cookin' with Ketchup! And here's a small sampling of fantastically fun artwork from the H. J. Heinz Company "57 Prize Winning Recipes" booklet from 1957 (but minus the actual recipes.) These images just make me happy-- and hungry too!
What's really funny is this recipe booklet is over 30 pages long--- and not a single mention of french fries!
Love the artwork on this brochure. The singing chickens with sombreros and overalls is great. I'm going to swipe it for my clip art files.
When I was in art school in the late '60s-early '70s one of my commercial art instructors told us to totally ignore this style. "It's out," he told us. "Don't ever get infected by older styles." I believed that for a while. Now when I look at it I can really appreciate it, not just because it's retro-cool, but cool all the way around.
Swipe away Pappy, that's why it's here! I had a drawing teacher at the Art Institute who would rag on Disney and Hanna Barbera all the time, he'd drive me crazy when making fun of stuff that is clearly timeless and following tried and true rules of great design... mostly I think he thought he was being cool to the kid students who were right out of high school because it was obvious in his own styles and technique that he was heavily influenced by both studios.
But yeah, those singing chickens are great. I love the chicken in the middle of the last batch of color images BBQ'in his girlfriend's leg (he's a leg man too) har!
>now i want a hamburger and it's 7:51 in the morning!
Anytime is the right time to eat a White Castle burger! I'm not crazy about the frozen ones though, you miss the essential STEAMY goodness unless you get them fresh from the source! Conventional oven or microwave just doesn't cut it...
>I love the simple color splashes of red and gray in these.
Me too! Very stark, dynamic-- and ketchuppy!
>tube? of biscuits. For the life of me, I can't figure out how that one figures into a ketchup recipe.
Page 18 / Recipe #28 from the cookbook, it's some sort of "spread" you put on cheese melt biscuits, doesn't sound bad actually:
HAM & CHEESE SNACKS:
1 package oven ready biscuits 1/2 can chopped ham, minced 1 cup grated sharp cheese 1/4 cup Heinz Tomato Ketchup 1/3 cup cucumber relish 1 teaspoon Heinz 57 Sauce
Heat oven to 425, place biscuits on greased cookie sheet, bake 10 mins, remove from oven, spread mixture on each biscuit, return to oven and bake 10 mins more.

Thank you for adding this. :) I was really wondering what these ketchup recipes could be - other than ketchup soup. My grandma used to make that.
DeleteI now regret not including a few recipes... I'll scan you some pages and email em to ya, howzat sound?
